In this class, learners will receive short video explanations, created by the instructor, of basic math and pre-algebra concepts as well as written posts explaining different skills and problem-solving methods. No outside video content will be used in this class. Each week, 2-3 short videos will be posted, along with 2-3 additional written explanations of concepts, tips, tricks, and so on, that will be posted into the classroom discussion. All content will be shared by 12pm ET (9am PT) on Monday of each week.

Students will also receive optional PDF assignments to practice each week’s concepts if they choose to do so. These assignments will be posted by 12pm ET (9am PT) on Monday of each week. They will receive feedback about their assignments after they turn them in to the instructor. Assignments should be turned in by midnight on Thursday of each week in order to receive timely feedback.

Students will also be able to message the instructor directly to receive individualized help with math assignments. All messages will receive responses within 24 hours of receiving them, though usually I will respond much more quickly.

Week 1: order of operations  and what to do with more than one set of grouping symbols. I will review order of operations and evaluate expressions with two or more grouping symbols, such as parentheses and brackets, or two sets of parentheses (one inside the other).

Week 2: vocab review and evaluating expressions. I will go over important pre-algebra vocabulary including variable, coefficient, etc., and show how to evaluate expressions containing variables. This will also be a good review of order of operations from week 1.

Week 3: positive and negative numbers and absolute value. I will explain positive and negative numbers using a number line and show how to add and subtract positive and negative numbers. I will also explain absolute value using the  number line. 

Week 4: finding an unknown number and solving a single-variable equation. I will briefly review vocabulary from week 2 and explain how we use algebra every day in real life without thinking about it. Then I will use equation mats and other methods to solve single-variable equations to find the unknown number.

Week 5: review order of operations and exponents, present radicals/roots. I will review order of operations and evaluating expressions with two or more grouping symbols as well as absolute value, and then we will discuss exponents and properties of exponents like multiplying/dividing bases, exponents raised up to powers, and more. I will also explain radicals and roots (which are the opposite of exponents) and how to evaluate perfect square/cube roots versus how to simplify roots that are not perfect.

Week 6: review single-variable equations with word problems. We will use equation mats and other methods to solve single-variable equations and find the mystery number as a good review, and then we will look at setting up an algebra equation from a given word problem.
