FLEX CLASS: Draw and Paint Using The Principles of Design
In this 8 week semester course, students will learn what the principles of design are, how to identify them in a work of art, and how to use them in their own art.
US Grade 5 - 8
Beginner - Intermediate Level
The Elements of Art and Principles of Design are very simple but important components of the National Core Art Standards. In this semester class, students will analyze one principle of design each week (pattern/repetition, balance, emphasis, rhythm, harmony, variety and movement), and create a work of art that incorporates or emphasizes that principle. Amount and type of homework will be based on individual choices and time needed to complete each work of art prior to the next...
Students will know and understand each of the principles of art and how they can be used in a work of art.
I am a licensed, veteran art teacher with over 30 years' experience teaching the elements of art. Over the years, I've found and developed fun and interesting art projects and processes to help kids learn and remember what the elements are and why they are important to the artistic process.
Homework OfferedBecause this is a flex class, each weekly assignment is essentially "homework," with the expectation that students will upload images of their assignments in the classroom.
2 - 4 hours per week outside of class
Assessments OfferedOptional grades can be given to students who need fine art credit for homeschooling or charter school requirements upon request. Otherwise, learner progress is assessed informally, through discussion throughout the course.
