Description
Class Experience
Learners will study vocabulary, predict, question, make connections, answer text-dependent questions, visualize, determine character traits, support opinions with details from the text, infer, note details, summarize, order text events, draw conclusions, compare and contrast characters, analyze the story from the main character's point-of-view, respond critically to the story.
I'm a retired elementary teacher with 27 years experience teaching grades 3-5. I have read this beloved novel with students year after year. It is always a class favorite and I would love to share it with your child too.
Learners will complete book activities each week and upload them to the classroom. They will create projects, complete scavenger hunts, debate, and play games that help them understand what the story means to them personally. Learners will be encouraged to think about and share how they would handle the many challenges the characters face throughout the story.
Each student needs a copy of the novel Because of Winn Dixie by Kate DiCamillo. Book can be paper or electronic... bought or borrowed.
I will provide feedback for each assignment that is submitted.
No live meetings, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Abandoned by her mother years ago, Opal, a 10-year-old girl, moves with her preacher father to a small town in Florida. Lonely and missing her old friends, Opal is ecstatic to find companionship with a rambunctious little dog she names Winn-Dixie, after the store where she found the pup. With Winn-Dixie's help, Opal befriends several colorful townsfolk and even begins mending her relationship with her father.
