After 15 years working with and in higher education I am offering this FLEX course in order to help learners become aware of the differences in the laws within special education in K12 and College. Understanding these laws and resources will enhance the learner's confidence in their college application, asking questions, and give them tools to pull from once they start their post-secondary experiences. Learners will improve their confidence when navigating the college possibilities and have resources to look for, questions to ask, and the peace of mind knowing that there are always answers and solutions if they are able to be curious, communicate, and be engaged in the post-secondary education! They will specifically learn the differences in the laws between K12 and post-secondary education regarding special education, accommodations, and other educational resources. They will learn their rights and how to advocate for themselves.
I am a social worker who has worked with and in higher education for 15 years. I have worked with community colleges, trade schools, private schools, and one of the top five largest universities in America. I continue to teach college courses and currently supervise one of the largest peer mentoring programs established to support first year students. Within my many hats in higher education I have also been a disability access consultant which means I have approved accommodations (similar to 504 & IEP) in colleges and advocated for students to ensure access to their educational rights.
Videos will post every Sunday during the four week course that includes a prompt at the end for them to discuss with their peers and a homework sheet for them to go more in-depth with how the lesson learned in the video directly relates to their accommodations now and in college. - Students will review the video & pdf slides by Wednesday of each week - Students will be given a prompt to answer in the video that they will need to post their answer on the discussion board post Wednesdays -Students will be given a homework sheet every week on Sundays that will be sent back to Thia on Wednesdays - Thursdays students will need to reply to their peers to see how others plan to utilize the materials learned This will be repeated each week in order to ensure that the students watched and obtained the skills needed to build upon each other for this four week flex (no live meetings) course.
Videos will be posted weekly on Sunday Evenings along with PDFs of the slides and the homework assignments
Students will will receive weekly feedback from Thia in order to assess how they are doing in the course based on their discussion board posts, peer replies, and homework reflection assignments.
No live meetings, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
