In this 16-week class, the student will learn the basics of chess, from understanding the pieces and their moves, to tactics and strategies used in the game. Week 1: Introduction to Chess Week 2: Understanding the Pieces and their Moves Week 3: The Chessboard and Notation Week 4: Opening Principles and Strategies Week 5: Basic Tactics Week 6: Checkmate Week 7: Planning and the Middlegame Week 8: More Advanced Tactics Week 9: More Advanced Strategies Week 10: Endgame Basics Week 11: More Advanced Endgame Strategies Week 12: Tournament Preparation Week 13: Famous Games and Players Week 14: Review and Practice Week 15: Review and Practice Week 16: Final Game / Tournament By the end of the class, your student will have a strong understanding of chess and be able to play confidently. The flexible schedule (Recorded Flex Class) allows your learners to watch the pre-recorded videos and do them at a time that is FUN for them! The videos will contain the information required to give students a good understanding of each topic, and each one will include homework for the students to undertake during the week. After watching each video and completing the homework assignments, students will be provided with feedback and the specific next steps on how to improve or adapt. Homework will take approximately 30 minutes to an hour each week, and will consist of practice games and puzzles. Learners will be assessed through informal assessments and feedback on their homework and tournament play. Time frame for the Week: Mondays - The teacher will post the information needed for the week. Students can submit questions. Tuesdays - Wednesday - The teacher can answer any questions pertaining to the topic of the week. The students will need to complete any homework assignments and answer any questions in the discussion. Thursday - Students need to have all tasks completed and uploaded in the classroom for teacher feedback and discussion. Students will discuss it among themselves. Friday - The teacher will provide feedback to the class and individual students. Saturday - Sunday - The teacher will be available to answer any questions that the students may have for the week or the next week. The flexible schedule (Recorded Flex Class) allows your learners to watch the pre-recorded videos and do them at a time that is FUN for them! You can also spend extra time on the topics your child is most interested in. Since this is a flex class with no live meetings, students can log in at a convenient time to complete the week's lesson. We will be going through each week as a group and I will post the lesson weekly (depending on which day you started). The videos will contain the information required to give students a good understanding of each topic and each one will include homework for the students to undertake during the week, as part of a project. After watching each video and completing the homework assignments, students will be provided with feedback and the specific next steps on how to improve or adapt. Learning Goals
Students will learn the fundamentals of chess, including how the pieces move, how to capture an opponent's piece, and how to checkmate the king. They will also develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
