Class Experience

The student will show progress with each project. After completing this course they will have successfully added necessary skills to their scope of knowledge that can help them move to an advanced sewing level.
I fell in love with sewing when I was just a little girl. Both my grandmother and mother loved to sew and passed on the gift of knowledge to me. I currently teach kids and adults how to sew and have an online store in which handbags and wallets among other items are sold. Sewing is a life skill that will always be useful, rewarding and has the potential to become a source of income.
Week 1: Practice to sew on a zipper for a multipurpose bag!
Week 2: Practice to sew on a button hole using your sewing machine!
Week 3: Practice to sew an elastic to a waistband!
Week 4: Practice to sew on a patch pocket.
Sewing machine: It can be a very simple model in good working condition with a new needle installed. Please refrain from buying a small kids or toy sewing machine. These tangle and create more problems. Models like any Brother LX version or Singer will work. Please have an extra bobbin and needles in case one breaks. Basic Sewing supplies: 1) Zipper: Cotton fabric 8 ½ ” X 4 ½” , a 9” zipper (zipper can be longer since we can cut to adjust size). 2) Button: Cotton fabric scrap 8” X 4”, a 3/4” or 1” button, and a hand sewing needle. 3) Elastic on Waistband: Cotton or cotton jersey fabric 12” X 6” and 8 ½” of 1/2” braided elastic. 4) Patch pocket: pattern, 7" X 8" cotton fabric, 6" X 6 1/2" cotton fabric. For all project a pencil or fabric marker, straight pins and fabric scissors. Cutting surface: a surface big enough to set fabric and a cutting mat.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
No live meetings, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Young students may require help handling sharp tools and keeping their hands at a safe distance from the sewing needle while sewing. They may also need a parent present to assist them troubleshooting their sewing machines, accessing videos, post photos, measure and cut fabric among other things.
