The Basics
 Week 1
Lesson 1
What Is a Sentence?
In this lesson, students will identify the essential components of a sentence. Students will cover the definitions of subjects and verbs. Students will learn the base of a sentence diagram and practice diagramming 2 word sentences.
Lesson 2
What Is a Helping Verb?
This lesson will begin with a recap diagramming 2 word sentences to ensure that students remember how to start a diagram. Students will then define helping verbs and discuss verb tense. Students will learn how to diagram sentences with helping verbs.
 Week 2
Lesson 3
What Is an Adjective?
Lesson 3 will start with a discussion of article words, A, An, and The. Students will be shown examples to help them determine the appropriate rule for using “A” vs. “An.” Students will first practice diagramming sentences with articles before defining adjectives. Students will then discuss and practice adding adjectives into their sentence diagrams.
Lesson 4
What Is an Adverb?
Lesson 4 will begin by defining adverbs and examining them as a modifier for verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. Students will really start to see their diagrams grow with the addition of adverbs. Students will have time to practice all that they have learned so far. After this lesson, I will post a quiz for students to complete and send to me for feedback. This is the end of unit 1.
Unit 2Prepositional Phrases

Prepositional Phrases
 Week 3
Lesson 5
What Is a Preposition?
Today, students will learn the definition of a preposition. They will learn that a preposition always comes in a phrase. Students will practice identifying prepositional phrases in sentences.
Lesson 6
What Is an Adjectival Prepositional Phrase?
An adjectival prepositional phrase is really just a fancy way of naming a prepositional phrase that does the job of an adjective. Students will learn to diagram prepositional phrases that are modifying noun or pronoun words.
 Week 4
Lesson 7
What Is an Adverbial Prepositional Phrase?
Once again, the term adverbial prepositional phrase is just a fancy way of naming a prepositional phrase that does the job of an adverb. Students will learn to diagram prepositional phrases that modifying verbs, adjectives, or adverbs. A quiz will be posted after this lesson. Students may complete the quiz and send it to me for feedback. This is the end of unit 2.
Unit 3Compound Parts

Compound Parts
 Week 4
Lesson 8
What Is a Compound Sentence?
In this lesson, students will learn about the seven coordinating conjunction words. I will often use the acronym FANBOYS to help students remember what those seven words are. Coordinating conjunctions create compound parts, so those words will be very important throughout this unit. Students will define compound sentences, diagram them, and spend some time focused on the importance of a comma in a compound sentence. Students will also learn how to use a semicolon.
 Week 5
Lesson 9
What Is a Compound Subject?
Students will review the coordinating conjunctions before diving into compound subjects. Students will define compound subjects and learn how to diagram them.
Lesson 10
What Is a Compound Predicate / Verb?
Students will review the coordinating conjunctions before defining a compound predicate or verb. Students will learn the reasons why these are sometimes called compound predicates and sometimes called compound verbs. Then they will diagram them.
 Week 6
Lesson 11
What about Adjectives and Adverbs?
Lesson 11 will begin by reviewing the coordinating conjunctions, along with the definitions of adjectives and adverbs. Then students will practice diagramming 2 or more adjectives and adverbs. This lesson will also discuss the difference between coordinate adjectives and cumulative adjectives.
Lesson 12
What Is a Compound Prepositional Phrase?
Lesson 12 will begin with a final review of the FANBOYS. I will ask students if they can recite the words by memory at this point. Students will then define and diagram compound prepositional phrases. At this point, diagramming any compound part should be fairly intuitive for students. At the end of this lesson, I will post a quiz for students to complete and send to me for feedback. This is the end of unit 3.
Unit 4Different Verbs

Different Verbs
 Week 7
Lesson 13

Lesson 14
How Do We Diagram Linking Verbs?
Lesson 14 will refresh students' memories about linking verbs and predicate words before explaining how to diagram them. Examples will start out fairly simple, and then students will have the opportunity to challenge themselves with examples that use all of the things we have learned so far in this course.
 Week 8
Lesson 15
What Is a Transitive Verb?
Today's lesson will tackle our final new topic of the course! Students will define transitive verbs, direct objects, and indirect objects. Students will practice identifying these things in sentences.
Lesson 16
How Do We Diagram Transitive Verbs?
Lesson 16, the final lesson, will begin by reviewing transitive verbs, direct objects, and indirect objects. Students will learn how to diagram all of these new pieces. Students will practice diagramming these things and all of the parts of speech that were covered in previous units. After this final class, I will post a quiz for students to complete and send to me for feedback. This is the end of unit 4.

I am a licensed English teacher for students in grades 5-12. I spent 4 years teaching in a public school, and I used sentence diagramming with the students I taught!

Each of the four unit quizzes will take students about a half an hour to complete as well.
1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
There are four units in this course. There is a quiz at the end of each unit. Students can either check their answers themselves or they can send it to the teacher for review.
Grades Offered
