Class Experience

US Grade 4
In this 8 week class, we will learn the common core skills taught in 1st quarter of 4th grade.
Students will be encouraged to ask questions and explain how they solved a problem. Students will receive a video(s) each week. The videos will either be fluency practice, mini lessons, or review. Students will get a lot of practice problems.

Week 1:
Students will receive videos in week 1. In the mini lessons this week students will learn about place value into the millions place. Students will receive questions that they will pause the video to answer and then resume the video once they have their answer. Students will learn and use the vocabulary digit and value. Students will practice saying numbers in the millions place and writing them in expanded form. Students will get a problem to solve at the end of the lesson. Students can record themselves solving and talking about how to solve the problem and post the video in the classroom. Student will be able to watch and comment on other students videos. Students will receive an assessment at the end of the week. Students will take a picture and send it to me to review.

Week 2:
In week 2, students will receive a fluency practice page. In our mini lessons for this week students will learn how to using >,<, and = to compare numbers and rounding numbers into the thousands place. At the end of the mini lesson students will get a problem to solve. Students can record themselves solving and explaining the steps they are using to solve the problem. Students will post the video in the classroom. Students will be able to watch and comment on other students videos. Students will receive an assessment at the end of the week. Students will take a picture and send it to me to review.

Week 3:
In week 3, students will practice fluency and review the skills taught in weeks 1 and 2. At the end of the video students will get problems to solve. Students will record themselves solving and explaining the steps they are using to solve the problems. Students will post the video in the classroom. Students will be able to watch and comment on other students videos. Students will receive an assessment at the end of the week. Students will take a picture and send it to me to review.

Week 4:
In week 4, Students will practice adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers in word problems. Students will receive problems during the video. They will pause the video to solve and then resume the video when they have completed the problem. At the end of the lesson students will receive a problem to solve. Students will record themselves solving and explaining how to solve their problem and post the video in the classroom. Students will get an assessment at the end of the week to complete. The students will take a picture of their assessment and send it to me for review.

Week 5:
During week 5 of class, the mini lessons we will be about the commutative, associative, and distributive properties of multiplication. Students will pause lessons to solve problems and then resume when they have completed the problem. Students will get a problem at the end of each mini lesson that they will record themselves solving and explaining how they are solving the problem. Students will also receive an assessment at the end of the week. They will take a picture of their assessment and send it to me for review.

Week 6:
In week 6, we will learn about metric unit conversions. Students will answer questions throughout the videos. Students will receive problems at the end of the lesson. Students will record themselves solving and explaining the problems. Students will receive an assessment at the end of the week. Students will take a picture of their assessment and send it to me for review.

Week 7:
In week 6, we will solve word problems using metric unit conversions. Students will answer questions throughout the video(s). Students will receive problems at the end of the lesson. Students will record themselves solving and explaining the problems. Students will receive an assessment at the end of the week. Students will take a picture of their assessment and send it to me for review.

Week 8:
In week 8, we will review all the skills taught in weeks 1-7. Students will answer questions throughout the videos. Students will receive problems at the end of the lesson. Students will record themselves solving and explaining the problems. Students will receive an assessment at the end of the week. Students will take a picture of their assessment and send it to me for review.

Learning Goals

Use the four operations with whole numbers to solve problems.2
4.OA.3 Solve multistep word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole-number
answers using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be
interpreted. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the
unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and
estimation strategies including rounding.

Generalize place value understanding for multi-digit whole numbers. (Grade 4 expectations
are limited to whole numbers less than or equal to 1,000,000.)
4.NBT.1 Recognize that in a multi-digit whole number, a digit in one place represents ten times what it
represents in the place to its right.
4.NBT.2 Read and write multi-digit whole numbers using base-ten numerals, number names, and
expanded form. Compare two multi-digit numbers based on meanings of the digits in each
place, using >, =, and < symbols to record the results of comparisons.
4.NBT.3 Use place value understanding to round multi-digit whole numbers to any place

Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit
arithmetic.
4.NBT.4 Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm

4.MD.13 Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units including km, m, cm; kg,
g; lb, oz.; l, ml; hr, min, sec. Within a single system of measurement, express measurements
in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Record measurement equivalents in a two-column
table. For example, know that 1 ft is 12 times as long as 1 in. Express the length of a
4 ft snake as 48 in. Generate a conversion table for feet and inches listing the number pairs
(1, 12), (2, 24), (3, 36), …

4.MD.24 Use the four operations to solve word problems involving distances, intervals of time, liquid
volumes, masses of objects, and money, including problems involving simple fractions or
decimals, and problems that require expressing measurements given in a larger unit in terms
of a smaller unit. Represent measurement quantities using diagrams such as number line
diagrams that feature a measurement scale.
