Flags of the World! 15 Week - Flex Class (Part 1 - The Popular)

This 15 week flex class will explore a group of flags by studying the history and design. Part 1 is The Popular: Canada, Denmark, Egypt, India, Union Jack (Intro), & United States (Intro).

Class experience

US Grade 6 - 9
Students will improve their knowledge of the flags of the world through original classroom uploads, classroom discussions, and optional field trips. Flags are a very visible symbol of a country and act as a brand/logo. It is fun to learn more about the colors, design and symbols used. This class will create recognition and awareness of different flags.
I have taught this class live for many years and enjoyed teaching students (domestic and international) about the iconic branding of flags and their symbols, colors, and designs. I am a member of NAVA and stay current on flags and flag topics. I am looking forward to offering this class for students with busier schedules or those that want to take specific flag classes. I love to travel so flags have become something that I started to recognize and then study. As part of my degree, I took many history classes as they tie in well with ELA. I teach as an ESL teacher so that has taught me to look classroom materials in a unique way. I create my own slides and adapt them as needed according to my students. I have taught hundreds of students and love to see their confidence grow as they learn and practice these important sounds. I am very patient and encouraging with all my students. Also, I have worked in graphic design, branding, logos, and colors for over thirty years. I look at flag design as art, as well.
Homework Offered
Videos will be posted in the classroom each Sunday by 9 pm EST. Students will be able to watch them and respond to discussion questions posted in the classroom. A fun flag question will be posted each week to prompt discussions such as how many flags have red.. Optional field trips and videos via Nearpod or Embedded YouTube links will be posted as well. Students may wish to continue their research into a specific flag of interest outside of class. Discussion questions will be posted on Wednesday and Saturday.

Assessments Offered
Students will improve their knowledge of the flags of the world through classroom discussions and questions. Optional: Students can share their new vexillology facts with friends and families.

In this class, we’ll take a look at the who, where, and how the history made contributions to flag and coat of arms design. We will start with an examination of what types of sources we have, both primary and secondary, and what these many different sources tell us. We will then examine those different sources and discuss the way this shaped the flag, symbols, foods, sports, traditions, tourism, and currency. In this class, we will discuss the role that certain sources have played. We will also use videos as secondary sources to expand our learning. I will present sources from many different areas to give an unbiased view of the flag/coat of arms/symbols/colors. My goal for this class is for students to walk away with a new eye for flag design. 

Links will be given in classroom for Nearpod field trip videos - content already created on the site. A code will allow you to access the content without a paid subscription.

Links will be given in classroom for Nearpod content that I have created in Google Slides and Exported to Nearpod. Example would be a Nearpod video challenging students to design their own flags. No paid subscriptions are needed to access this class. 

YouTube videos will occasionally be embedded in the Outschool classroom if they provide enhanced learning opportunities. Example would be a YouTube video showing the building of the Rocky Mountain Express train route.

I create my own slides/videos/course content using source materials, history classes, and research using a variety of sources.  These presentations will be a screen share of my Google Slide presentations. Students will not be asked to visit the sites nor will we share screen to these source materials. These are sites that provide source material for my presentations.
