A colouring page will be uploaded to the classroom the day before class for students to print or copy. The main class activity will revolve around colouring and labelling the countries, capitals, and flags associated with the UK, England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and the Republic of Ireland. The class involve components such as mini-lecture segments on relevant geography (landmarks/cities within each country) and objective history (such as when a particular flag came into official...
Students will become familiar the flags associated with the UK, England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and the Republic of Ireland.
A colouring sheet will be provided before class. Any colouring materials (as many colours as you like, but ideally have at least a red, a blue, a green, and a yellow/orange!).
45 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
The flying of various flags in Northern Ireland has historically been a contentious issue, with no official flag (other than the Union Flag) and different communities identifying with different flags. For the purposes of this class, we will consider both the Ulster Banner and St Patrick's Saltire. This class will also cover St George's Cross, St Andrew's Cross, the Irish Tricolour, and the Flag of Wales. I will acknowledge alternative and historical forms of flags and coats of arms during the class, though the current official flags will be placed on the colouring sheet.
