The five themes of geography are location, place, human-environment interaction, movement and region. These themes have been developed by geographers to help us study various aspects of our world. They help us answer not only the question, where is something, but also why is it there and what are the consequences of it? These themes are the lens by which geography is studied. For this class, we will meet 5 times. Please note that sometimes this class is offered 5 days in one week and other times 1 day a week for 5 weeks. Check the schedule for the section you want to enroll in to be sure it does work for you. Each meeting will deal with a different theme starting with location. During each class the students will learn about the particular theme. Then we will go over some examples to ensure students understand it. Finally as homework students will be assigned a fun activity that they can do so as to help them apply what they have learned. These activities will include maps, pictures, a little research and will vary each week. The following week, students will share what they have completed for homework to reinforce what has been learned before we dive into the next theme. Students will not need any background knowledge of geography. Progress will be evaluated by how students demonstrate what they have learned from the previous week.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Social Studies Center started out with Laura Forde teaching as an individual on Outschool in 2016. She is a licensed Social Studies teacher with a BS in Social Studies Education and a MS in Educational Leadership who has taught since 2003 in both North Dakota, West Virginia and online. As Outschool grew, demand for her engaging, effective classes grew as well. Now an organization of qualified teachers continue to teach the content in a similar format and engagement.
We believe that students need to be engaged and involved in their learning. In our classes, we try to give the kids new information, have them practice it, and then apply it. We also believe it is important that what is learned in class is relevant to their own lives. Having student-centered learning and a tie to their lives helps students retain what they have learned. Our subject specialties are history, government, geography, criminal law, sociology, and other social studies classes.
We love the content we teach and believe that you are never too old to learn more. We continue to challenge ourselves through professional development, books/articles, and research to always be improving and to ensure your child is given the best learning experience we can possibly deliver.
