There comes a time in every student's school career when they'll be asked to write a five-paragraph essay. And once the five-paragraph essays start, they just keep coming. The best way to gain confidence with this form is to practice in a lower-stakes setting. That's where this class comes in. We will take this foundational essay form and walk through it, sentence-by-sentence, producing one paragraph per day, and discussing the form and function of each paragraph as a piece of the overall essay. This class can be taken repeatedly (using different essay topics) until the student is so comfortable with the five-paragraph essay that they'll be writing them with ease and aplomb. Day one: we will discuss the purpose of five-paragraph essays, examine two sample essays, paying particular attention to their introductory paragraphs, then we will brainstorm topics for our essays, and each student will write an introductory paragraph of their own (5+ sentences). Day two: we will discuss body paragraphs, examine the first body paragraphs from our sample essays, brainstorm for supporting details, and write first body paragraphs of our own (5+ sentences). On this day, our focus will be persuasion. Day three: we will discuss body paragraphs, examine the second body paragraphs from our sample essays, brainstorm, and write second body paragraphs of our own (5+ sentences). On this day our focus will be fact vs. opinion. Day four: we will discuss body paragraphs, examine the third body paragraphs from our sample essays, brainstorm, and write third body paragraphs of our own (5+ sentences). On this day our focus will be research. Day five: we will discuss concluding paragraphs, examine the concluding paragraphs of our sample essays, write concluding paragraphs of our own (5+ sentences), and then spend some time editing and tightening our final essays. In each class, students will type their (5+) sentences into the chat feature of zoom, and then write them on paper as well. Please come prepared to do both.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I teach classes that have a language arts focus. My classes are usually for learners aged 8-16, but don't hesitate to let me know if you're looking for something similar for a younger learner - I'm happy to work with all ages. I am also a lifelong enthusiastic artist, so I love to teach classes on drawing.
I have worked as a professional tutor for over twelve years; first for the California Board of Education, and later for a private company where I was made Language Arts Program Director for the entire organization. I've taught students from ages 5-18, in class sizes ranging from 1-20.
My teaching philosophy is that education should be, as far as is practical, learner-directed. I value the learners' input, their interest, and their active curiosity. If the learner is interested and having fun, they will remember what they've learned and seek to build upon it and share it. Learning should be a pleasure so that it becomes a lifelong habit of mind, even after the school years have passed.
Finally, I believe that a happy and passionate teacher makes for happy and passionate learners, which is why all of my classes are about topics that I truly enjoy and can't wait to share and discuss with young learners.
