Fitness & Wellness for Girls: Learn the Science and Get Moving (Yoga, Strength)!

In this ongoing fitness class we will spend the first 10-15 minutes discussing the science behind a specific wellness topic (including nutrition), and then get up and get moving! Includes stretching, mobility, strength training exercises.

Mastery Evaluation
1 hour per week. No homework requirement. No quizzes or tests. Learners will be encouraged to share their daily walking/step averages if they would like!

Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 9
Beginner Level
Each week we will have a different wellness or fitness topic to discuss during the first 10 minutes of class (I want my learners to know the WHY and the SCIENCE behind wellness and fitness!).  We will follow that up with various exercises including stretching/yoga poses, mobility, and strength training with light weights (or even water bottles). I will also have learners track their steps daily and report back!

Examples of topics discussed will include the science and importance of: 
*exercise recovery (muscles are build while eating and sleeping!)
*sleep
*stress management (yoga, socializing, personal spiritual practices, nature, and more)
*nutrition (micronutrients, macronutrients, and whole foods)
*body systems impacted by exercise (cardiovascular, respiratory/VO2, skeletal/muscular, endocrine system)
*lymphatic drainage practices (rebounding, walking, yoga, hydration, and more)
*walking 
*other wellness practices (breathwork, cold plunge, sauna, and more) 

Topics may include links to published studies and teaching slides. Exercises will be demonstrated in my home gym. I'll spend part of the time performing the exercises with learners and part of the time monitoring those who have their cameras on to provide encouragement and feedback if necessary. 

Week of March 31: 
Topic: Science of Sleep
Exercise: Yoga and Mobility Exercises

Week of April 7: 
Topic: Excelling in Exercise Recovery
Exercise: Stretch and Strength - upper body

Week of April 14: 
Topic: Nature Nurtures
Exercise: Stretch and Strength - lower body

Week of April 21: 
Topic: Necessary Nutrients
Exercise: Calisthenics (body weight exercise)

Learning Goals

Students will learn proper form for various exercise moves.
Students will learn about micro and macro-nutrient requirements.

Learning Needs
I am available to answer any questions about form during class.
Parental Guidance
Parents should monitor the following with learners: *proper apparel in class (midriff, buttocks and chest should be covered) *hydration and possible electrolyte beverage intake if necessary *sleep *proper food intake (enough calories!) *proper form (I will monitor this to the best of my ability, as well) *I ask that learners do not exceed 5 or 10 lb dumbbells (for learner safety and maximum height-growth potential) *Dumbbells are not required, body weight or water bottles are fine (especially at first!) No external accounts or websites required. We will use zoom only.
Supply List
2 dumbbells (5 or 10 lb. - OR 2 water bottles as hand-weights)

step counter of some sort (smart watch, smart ring, or a simple step counter that attaches to the waist)

Bachelor's Degree in Science from The Florida State University
I have a Bachelor of Science degree from Florida State University (pre-med track) in Nutrition. My classes also included pre-med Anatomy & Physiology and Exercise Physiology as part of my degree. After college I studied strength training and have attended many yoga classes at professional yoga studios over the years. I've been an avid exerciser since high school, including yoga, strength training, and cardio (classes, machines, and walking). I'm very enthusiastic about supporting my family with holistic health practices! In addition, I homeschooled one of my children and taught middle school science for 5 years in the Florida public school system and teach middle and high school science here on Outschool.
