*Please note this class should be taken by a 6-8 year old but could be taken by an older 5 year-old who can read at a first grade level or above, has a great attention span, and is needing enrichment. In addition, for an advanced 7-8 year-old who has a particular interest in marine life, this class may be a refresher, rather than a source of new information. Also, to take this class, it is helpful if students can read at a first grade level or above. . The class will run as follows: -Introductions -Conversation starter regarding life under the sea used as an ice breaker and for teacher to test students' prior knowledge -Slide show with short video clips and photos (students will be able to take turns sharing comments or asking questions pertaining to the information during the slideshow) -Teacher will review characteristics of both fish and marine mammals with students while they fill out their graphic organizer -Teacher vs.Student game: Teacher will give fish or marine mammal clues. For example, the teacher will talk about characteristics of a dolphin or shark. The students will pick the correct card (they will use their picture cards cut from the printable sheet) then hold up the correct answers. If all the students choose the correct card, they get a point, if not the teacher gets a point. -Any extra time will be used for the students to share a story or item about their favorite fish or marine mammal.
Learning Goals
Students will be able to differentiate between a fish and a mammal by the end of this class.

Parental Guidance
Some photos of sharks may look frightening to young children. However, there will be NO graphic or violent photos.
Supply List
Printable "Fish or Marine Mammal sheet" to be completed during class. Fish or Marine Mammal picture sheet; to be cut into two cards to use during the Teacher v. Student game. If you do not have access to a printer, your child may cut out a picture of each of those animals or draw a picture of each one to use instead of the print outs.

I am a former Kindergarten and 2nd Grade teacher and nurse. I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education, therefore I have an interest in science-based topics and have taken many science-related college courses.
In addition, I have traveled with my husband and kids to Florida’s gulf coast, Mexico, and Dominican Republic several times to snorkel and explore the amazing creatures of the sea!
