Description
Class Experience
Students will learn about characterization, plot development, theme, symbolism, and suspense. Students will learn about the "hero's journey." Students will grow in their listening, speaking, and reading comprehension skills. Students will have the opportunity to discuss this book with other peers who are new to the Harry Potter universe.
Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone was the first book I ever loved, and the book that launched me on the path of becoming an avid reader and eventually an English teacher. I have been a high school English teacher in the physical classroom for nearly four years. I am certified to teach English Language Arts grades 7-12, and I minored in English. One of my favorite parts of my job is helping students connect the dots in reading and analyzing literature; I love helping them understand the various techniques in order to greater understand and appreciate the text as a whole. I truly believe that all students have the ability to enjoy reading and literature if they understand the most basic components, and the first book I ever recommend to a reluctant reader is Harry Potter. I'd love the opportunity to guide your student through the wonderful wizarding world of Harry Potter and to show them all the series has to offer!
Students will be assigned a set number of pages/chapters outside of class; students will be expected to come to class prepared. Students will occasionally watch brief videos prior to the beginning of class.
Students will need to have a personal copy of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone prior to the first class.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
This class is over the book Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Book One in the Harry Potter series. Please be advised that this book discusses magic and contains some mild violence.
