Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 2
In this ongoing class students will gather together to develop and practice their reading skills. Students will practice their phonic skills by reading CCVC words (consonant-consonant-vowel-consonant), CVCC words (consonant-vowel-consonant-consonant) words, CVCe words (consonant-vowel-consonant-e) and more! Each week, students will engage in hands on activities (a worksheet will be uploaded prior to class), interactive slides, and discussion with their peers and myself. Students will work on sounding out and blending letters, reading as a group, and will be given several opportunities to read independently and/or with teacher assistance. Each class we will review three common rules that can change our words (bossy e, adding 'ing' and using y as a vowel). After reading our words students will practice recognizing the blend of the week by reading it in different sentences. For example, during the "fl" week we will read sentences such as "Flip the flamingo liked to float with his flip-flops on".

During the first class of the week students will be introduced to the letter blend/ rule and practice reading words and sentences based on the rule/blend. At the end of class we will go over the optional worksheet. During the second class of the week we will play a game of BINGO where the students will see the words on the screen (slideshow) and will take turn reading the words and sentences.

Students in this class should have CVC words mastered and be able to read CVCe words independently. Students in this class should be ready to start reading more challenging families (snow, snowy, snowing etc). If your little one is still learning their words families and CVC words or CVCe words I encourage you to enroll them in level 1 or 2 of this course.
