Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 2
I will teach reading, writing, and grammar skills that support lower elementary ELA curriculums. Language arts skills are practiced and reinforced during each lesson. This is a perfect class to review and extend what children learn in school. I will support students' reading and language skills with guided lessons that feature targeted instruction in reading comprehension, spelling rules, and grammar review (including parts of speech and vocabulary). We will also practice reading fluency with Reader's Theater short drama plays. In addition, students will practice different types of writing, including writing complete, detailed sentences that pertain to a topic.
*Each session will review and reinforce different language arts skills so that students can join anytime!

Iowa Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Hello, my name is Kathleen Bernath Jenkins and I am a recently retired elementary public school teacher in Missouri. I have a bachelor's degree in elementary education and a master's degree in differentiated instructional methods. Most recently, I have taught fourth-grade students the core academic skills: reading, grammar, writing, math, science, and social studies.
I have a passion for teaching children the skills needed for them to be successful citizens. I believe all children can achieve success at school by differentiating instructional methods, which allows for individual growth and expression. My approach to teaching is to focus on best practices, those proven to be successful across all educational settings: teacher modeling and interaction with students, setting clear objectives at the start of each lesson, encouraging group participation, and debriefing together at the close of a lesson.
Besides my love of teaching, I also have a greenhouse and enjoy growing and propagating plants, especially tropical and rare varieties!
