Class Experience

As a follow-up to our "American Women & Election" drawing camp, students will continue to celebrate the American presidential election by drawing a First Lady character at an inaugural ball. For the first four days of the camp, students will look at photos and be inspired to draw similar dresses and hairstyles; but by the last day of camp, students should have more confidence to draw a more personalized character. Students of all drawing abilities are able to enjoy this class as the Travel Girl is drawn using shapes and lines. Prior American political knowledge is not needed.

Travel Girl is a character created by Teacher MoMo. The Travel Girl travels the world and explores different cultures. This class is one of several drawing classes featuring this character in a unique cultural setting.

The class will begin with an introduction to the presidential inaugural ball by looking at photos. Basic information about various First Ladies will be given. Next, students will look at specific photos of an inaugural dress and then look at the teacher's drawing of the dress. This will serve as the model for drawing the character. Each student will decide background, color combinations, and accessories for his/her picture in order to have the drawing more personal. Lastly, students will color the picture using color pencils.

By the end of each class, students will have a beautiful Travel Girl drawing and know more about fashion at the inaugural ball. As the teacher, I will guide students to create a unique drawing that reflects their personalities and curiosity about Election 2020 and Inauguration 2021.

I am passionate about teaching appreciation of our world's cultures, societies, and people in a fun and engaging way that will spark a lifelong curiosity about our global community and a desire to be active and productive community members. I would like to work with learners from 6 to 18 years old. I have a degree in Sociology from UCLA, visited more than 30 countries, and lived/taught in five countries. I love to explore our global community from teas to art to traditional clothing.

Since 2005, I have taught English as a foreign language. I have taught in Asia, Central America, South America and North America. I have taught all age levels from young learners to middle school students to college students. For the past five years, I have been teaching English online to very young learners in China.

I believe learning should be fun, interactive and relevant to students' lives. Students should be inspired and encouraged to be active learners and full participants in developing their knowledge of the world.

On a personal note, I have two big dreams that I'm pursuing now. The first is to live in London for a year as a writer. Because of the Covid pandemic, I am not sure when this will happen. The second is to publish The Next Great American Novel. (I have a Master's degree in Nonfiction Writing from USC.)
