First Impressions on Paper: How to Build a Resume for Jobs or Scholarships

This class will focus on reviewing materials a student has for a resume (or helping them set one up). Students will be given a selection templates to reference, and be guided to set up a resume for jobs or scholarships.

In this empowering and interactive class, students will learn the essential skills of crafting an impressive resume that stands out to potential employers and scholarship committees. We'll dive deep into the art of presenting oneself effectively on paper, focusing on how to highlight strengths, achievements, and potential in a clear, concise, and professional manner.

Key components of a strong resume
Tailoring resumes for different purposes (jobs vs. scholarships)

Formatting and design principles for easy readability
Avoiding common resume pitfalls

Resume basics and types (chronological, functional, combination)
Personal information and contact details
Crafting a compelling objective or summary statement
Education section: How to present academic achievements
Experience section: Highlighting relevant work, volunteer, and extracurricular activities
Skills section: Showcasing both hard and soft skills
Achievements and awards: Making your accomplishments shine
References: When and how to include them
Customizing your resume for specific opportunities
Proofreading and editing techniques
Class structure:
Our class will be divided into interactive segments, each focusing on a specific aspect of resume building. We'll start with a brief lecture to introduce concepts, followed by guided practice, peer review sessions, and individual work time.

My teaching approach is centered on empowering students through tool and resource utilization. I believe in providing students with the knowledge and resources they need to succeed independently.

Students will have ample opportunities to interact and engage throughout the class:

Brief lectures (20% of class time) to introduce key concepts

Guided practice using online resume builders and templates (25% of class time)
Peer review exercises to provide and receive constructive feedback (15% of class time)
Individual work time with personalized instructor support (20% of class time)
Additional details for parents:

Students will need access to a computer with internet connection to participate fully in the class.
We'll be using free, online resume builders and templates that are appropriate for students.
No prior experience in resume writing is necessary – this class is suitable for beginners.
By the end of the class, each student will have a draft resume tailored to their experiences and goals.
Students will receive a digital handbook with tips, resources, and templates for future use.
Follow-up email support will be provided for two weeks after the class ends for any additional questions.

Have a list of skills, achievements, and other items commonly found on a resume with dates. We will work through the process.
