By the end of First Grade in our Waldorf-Inspired Curriculum class, learners will have developed an enriched understanding of language arts, math, science, and art. In Language Arts, learners will expand their reading skills to identify words and simple sentences, cultivating a broad vocabulary through engaging stories and texts. They will start to write independently, learning to construct sentences and express ideas coherently. These activities will also serve to nurture their listening skills and enhance comprehension abilities. In Math, learners will build on their Kindergarten foundation to gain a deeper understanding of numbers up to 100. They will master basic addition and subtraction facts, and will be introduced to the concept of place value. Activities will involve manipulatives and real-world examples to make abstract concepts more tangible. For Science, the focus will be on fostering a greater appreciation and understanding of the natural world. Learners will explore various ecosystems, life cycles, the water cycle, and basic astronomy concepts. This experiential learning will nurture their observation skills, scientific curiosity, and environmental stewardship. In Art, learners will delve deeper into various art forms, enhancing their fine motor skills and creativity. They will have opportunities to express themselves through drawing, painting, and crafting, promoting their understanding of shapes, colors, and patterns. The integration of movement and music throughout the curriculum supports the development of gross motor skills, rhythm, and coordination. It also enriches their socio-emotional learning, fostering collaboration, respect, and empathy. Overall, the goal for First Grade learners is to expand their knowledge, nurture their curiosity, encourage creativity, and develop well-rounded skills for their academic journey. They'll grow in a holistic environment that emphasizes cognitive, emotional, social, and physical development.
All our grade teachers are trained and qualified Waldorf teachers with extensive experience working in Waldorf schools.
Each week there will be suggested homework provided in the study plan. This is not compulsory and the children do not need to submit it.
A3 sketchbook Block and stick crayons Coloring pencils Stockmar style watercolor paints Brushes A3 watercolor painting paper Sponge for wetting the paper * If you would like to print the activity booklets you will need access to a printer *
3 hours 40 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Depending on your learner's abilities, you will have to prepare the materials for your learner so they are able to start the activity with me. You may also need to support your learner in the art activities. An example is providing them with paint, glue or maybe cut up the tissue paper for patchwork pictures. You will have instructions on what to prepare at the start of each week. The teacher will set your child activities to do at home in family time. If you choose to complete the homeschool activities set by the teacher you will work alongside your child to do this. (please note this is not live class time and the extra work is not compulsory) Sometimes we may also do some movement (for example making shapes with our bodies), which you can supervise.
We do not use any external resources. The study booklet and activity booklet are PDFs that we share in the classroom each week.
