Class Experience

Students will be assigned a weekly spelling list with 10 words. During live classes, we will discuss patterns in the words and spelling rules as they apply. A basic list and a list of challenge words will be provided to address a variety of skill levels. We will also discuss the proper usage and share creative work. Instruction follows the Phono-Graphix method for teaching reading and spelling. This method was developed with the dyslexic learner in mind. Homework assignments will be given...

Students will learn the proper spelling of first grade level words and their usage in the English language. Special focus on phonemic awareness, homophones, and words that just don't fit the "rules".

I am a state certified Elementary Teacher who has become aware of the absence of structured spelling instruction in the schools today. In my private reading tutoring practice, I have watched my students become strong and independent spellers by using my approach. I have taught over a thousand spelling students on Outschool since March 2020 in second through middle school grade levels.

Homework is assigned after the first two live meetings to practice the word list. Spelling worksheets will be provided for homework after the live class meets.

Students will only need lined writing paper and a pencil for Monday and Friday's lesson. The Wednesday class requires either colored pencils or fine-tipped markers and either lined or unlined paper. Spelling activity documents will be found in the classroom for printing on the day class starts.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

On the third live class day, we will take a spelling test and check our work.

1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
