This interactive class will introduce students to 4-5 sight words a week. We will read stories with weekly sight words. We will also practice writing, reading, and playing with words. During these lessons, your child will have an opportunity to read, write, and learn. I will help students refine reading skills and decoding strategies. Students will have plenty of opportunities to participate. I have over 20 years of experience teaching new and struggling readers. Students should be familiar with letters and letter sounds and show signs of a beginning reader (can read simple sentences and has a sight word vocabulary of at least 20 words). Book Range: Level D Lexile 160-310 The month of October: Decoding Strategy: Find a Small Word/ Long Vowel Words O, U, Vowel pairs/ Punctuation The month of November: Decoding Strategy: Using Meaning/Vowel Pairs/ Brainstorming The month of December: Decoding Strategy: Using a Word You Know/ Long Vowel Pairs/ Organization Please note: *** These classes are 25 minutes but sometimes run a few minutes longer with more students or may finish a few minutes early. ***This class will focus on reading levels D-J. These books will contain sight words that are being introduced, picture support, and multiple lines of text. *** Levels A-C are on an approximate Kindergarten level. My Professional Background:
I obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from UNCW in 1996. I am a licensed teacher in the areas of Early Childhood (ages 3-8), Elementary Education (ages 8-12), and a Reading Specialist. I also hold an NBCT (National Board Certified Teacher) license and TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) certificate. I have over 25 years of teaching experience and have been teaching online since 2020.
I currently homeschool two of my three children and work from home.
My Teaching Philosophy:
I believe meeting a student where they are is essential to help them learn successfully. I offer a differentiated style to allow all learners an opportunity to participate. I believe in a multi-sensory approach to learning. I want all children to love reading and learning in general. I am passionate about children gaining confidence in their abilities and feeling successful.
