US Grade 1
In this ongoing class students will gather together to develop and practice early reading skills. Students will be introduced to different letter blends and CVCe words, as well as kindergarten/first grade sight words. Students will engage in hands on activities (a worksheet will be uploaded prior to class), interactive slides, and discussion with their peers and myself. Students will work on sounding out and blending letters, reading words as a group, and will be given several opportunities to read independently and/or with teacher assistance. The sight words we will look at each week will help us form sentences at the end of class. For example, during the "long a" CVCe week we will look at the sight words "I, have, a, it, is," and read sentences like, "It is a cape. The cat has a red cape. I see a big hog. The mole is in the hole. I rode it home. The kite is big." etc. Allowing students to practice reading sentences at the end of class will help them start to recognize their sight words as well as foster confidence when beginning to read! Students should have some prior reading experience and be able to read CVC words independently / with minimal assistance to enroll in this class (if they are new to reading please enroll in my level 1 course linked below). In our first class of the week we will practice reading different words and sentences and will end class by writing out some of the words. During the second class of the week we will play a game of CVC, CVCe, and Sight Word BINGO (a card will be sent out each week) to review the words read that week. Students will see the words on the screen (slideshow with pictures for assistance) and will each be given turns to read the word to the class :) Level 1 Class (Please note this is a level 2 class. If your little one is just starting to read, please consider the class below). https://outschool.com/classes/learning-to-read-and-write-blending-reading-and-writing-cvc-words-and-simple-sen-aX6mP6VT ***********2024 / 2025 Schedule **************************************** September 2 - September 8 Vowel Sound: Long a (bossy e) Sight Words: all, am, are, at September 9 - September 15 Vowel Sound: Long a (ay) Sight Words: at, be, black, brown September 16 - September 22 Vowel Sound: Long a (ai) Sight Words: but, came, did, do September 23 - September 29 Vowel Sound: Long a (bossy e, ay, ai) Sight Words: eat, four, good, get September 30 - October 6 Vowel Sound: Long e (e, ee) Sight Words: have, he, into, like October 7 - October 13 Vowel Sound: Long e (ey, ea) Sight Words: must, new, no, now October 14 - October 20 Vowel Sound: Long e (e, ee, ey, ea) Sight Words: on, off, put, please October 21 - October 27 Vowel Sound: Long I (bossy e) Sight Words: pretty, ran, ride, saw October 28 - November 3 Vowel Sound: Long I (ie, y making an i sound) Sight Words: say, she, so, soon November 4 - November 10 FALL BREAK.
