Class Experience

US Grade 2
Beginner - Intermediate Level
Lets conquer those first grade math skills. This class is for average first graders or advanced kindergarteners. We will have loads of fun in this math class learning math skills that are needed to be successful in first grade. We will learn, counting, numbers quantities to 50, 2D/3D shapes, measuring, addition and subtraction with and without regrouping, word problems, and so much more. We start off our class with a math journal time and the class will have to solve a word problem in their math journal. We also count within 500 by 1's, 2's 5's, and 10's starting from different numbers and ending with different numbers each day. For example, one day we may count by 5's from 300-500 and the next by 10's from 300-500. I like to incorporate movement into my classes to make class more fun. I do incorporate challenge questions to help the children learn how to think critically. We also do a spiral review each class to keep old concepts learned fresh so children do not forget. Next, we will review the skill for the day followed by a guided practice. If time allows at the end of the class, the children like to play brain challenge games. These games will help them with their listening and critical thinking skills. I often give additional activities for children to do in between classes if they want the extra work. The work is optional! Bring your favorite counting objects to class each week for some math fun! Occasionally, I will ask your child to bring things that you often have at home to learn skills such as measuring, counting, adding, subtracting, graphing, patterning, sorting, and more. I want all my student's to succeed! I look forward to seeing your child in the classroom!
See the chart below for a breakdown of what skills will be taught each week:

1. Math Journal Time: Student's will work a word problem in his/her math journal. Student's will get a chance to create his/her own math problem using math skills they already know.
2. We will review key skills necessary for success in first grade(Items are listed below)
4. I encourage the class to ask questions if they do not understand something.
5. Now that we have reviewed, it's time to play a math game! That's everyone's favorite time of the class!

This is an ongoing class which means that you can join any week and leave any week. When we get the last week, we will start back over with the first topic and the description will be updated to reflect what we are learning from week to week. Hello Everyone!! I love to teach fun and engaging classes for children ages 3-8. I enjoy being silly and singing silly songs with the class. My puppets and my own pets often visit the class. I have been teaching Prekindergarten for the past 8 years and before that, I taught kindergarten for 9 years. I love the energy that the young learners bring to class.

When I am not teaching, you will find me hanging out with my family around a camp fire or traveling around the United States. I am also a Girl Scout leader in my community and love taking my Girl Scout troop on many adventures including camping trips, field trips and hiking trips. We like to earn a lot of STEM and nature badges. I love the outdoors and try to get out as much as possible. When I taught in the local public school classroom, I would often take my class outdoors to teach if it was a nice day. So come join me in class and see what adventures we will take! I have been getting requests for classes during the after school hours, so I am starting to add more classes during the after school hours. I look forward to seeing you in class!!
