Description

Class Experience

Students will recognize the characteristics and elements that make up different literary genres.
Students will identify elements of a story.
Students will draw conclusions from the inferences in the text of the first chapter of each novel read to them.
Students will make connections between the text and world experiences and knowledge.
I hold a BA in Library Science and Media from the University of Arizona. I have taught research and library science skills at the middle school level for 7 years. I also sponsor a weekly book club for 6-7th grade students during the school year. I enjoy seeing students develop a love of reading and I am honored to help foster that love.
No homework will be assigned. This is an ongoing class with the understanding that each week is a separate lesson and is not connected to the previous week.
All books that will be read will be listed in the class description and learners along with their families are more than welcome to review these as well each week. But, this is not required. It is completely up to the learner and family.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Learners will be assessed informally with verbal responses within the group discussions and by participating in an interactive Kahoot game. Kahoot is a 3rd party resource that will be shared with the learners via screen share during class. Learners will not be expected to create a Kahoot account. They will be provided with a scannable QR code that can be used with their own devices during the screen share portion of class.
45 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Students will participate in a game via the Kahoot website that will be shared with each student through a screen share from the teacher to informally assess their understanding of the lesson each week. Students will not be asked to create their own Kahoot account. A scannable QR code will be provided through screen share for students to scan with their individual devices. Learners will be encouraged to share their thoughts and opinions on the different genres and novels that we discuss. All content that is shared by the teacher will be age appropriate but please be aware that your learner might wish to read a title shared by a fellow learner that might not fit your family's criteria. Research and chat with your learner about these titles. If I can be of any assistance in this, please feel free to reach out to me. These conversations are sometimes a learning experience in themselves. Thank you for sharing your learners with me!
All materials and resources for this class will be provided by the teacher and listed in the class description.
