Beginner - Advanced Level
Start at any time! Second Graders Welcomed! This class covers Reading and Writing at an upper First to lower Second Grade level. Reading topics will include asking and answering questions, inferencing, context clues, main ideas and details. Writing topics covered will include prefixes and suffixes, complete sentences, parts of speech, capitalization, punctuation, and beginning paragraph writing. Class begins with a discussion and examples of the writing skill being taught. Guided lessons take your learner through the process of creating solid sentences and relating them to one another in a paragraph. Week of April 28: Reading: Ask and Answer Questions /Writing: Adjectives Week of May 5: Reading: Main Idea /Writing: Adding detail with adjectives Week of May 12: Reading: Main Idea and describing topics in a story with adjectives /Writing: Opinion Writing Week of May 19: Reading: Rhyming Words /Writing: Parts of Speech: Nouns and Verbs Week of May 26: Reading: Making Inferences /Writing: Complete Sentences Week of June 2: Reading: Synonyms (working with context clues) /Writing: Prefix "pre" and Past Tense Verbs. Week of June 9th: Reading: Identifying Details /Writing: Synonyms Week of June 16th: Reading: Main Idea and Details in Informational Text /Writing: Prefix re- and Writing Complete Sentences Week of June 23rd: Reading: Context Clues /Writing: Fact or Opinion Week of June 30th: Reading: Making Inferences /Writing: Writing an Opinion Paragraph Week of July 7th: Reading: Central Message or Moral /Writing: Proper Nouns Week of July 14th: Reading: Connecting historical events/Expressing an opinion connected to text. /Writing: Regular Plurals/Writing a Letter Week of July 21st: Reading: Sequencing Events/Identifying Adjectives /Writing: Using Adjectives Week of July 28th: Reading: Key Details /Writing: Using Adjectives Week of July 28th: Reading: Compare and Contrast/Setting and Characters /Writing: Using Adverbs Week of August 4th: Reading: Key Details/Antonyms /Writing: Antonyms/Prefix: un- Week of August 11th: Reading: Key Details (Informational Text on Plants) /Writing: Informational writing. Write about the parts of a plant and their functions. Week of August 18th: Reading: Supporting answers with text evidence. /Writing: Irregular plurals MORE to COME! This class will meet year-round and currently contains 36 lessons.

Learners should be above the emergent reader level.
Supply List
Several sheets of paper, a pencil, and an eraser. Colored pencils are encouraged.
