US Grade 2
Fluency is the ability to read a text accurately, quickly, and with expression. Reading fluency is important because it provides a bridge between word recognition and comprehension. Fluency is also very important for motivation! In this flex tutoring session, there will be a short video (5-8 minutes). I will read a passage to the students without expression. Next, I will read the passage with fluency and expression. I will read it 2 more times with fluency and expression. Last, I will model how to find the answers to comprehension questions in the passage by highlighting the correct answer in the passage. By the end of first grade, students should be able to read 75-100 words per minute and by the end of second grade they should be able to read 90-120 words per minute. After each session, students will time themselves for 1 minute. Numbers are on the side of the passage to assist with this. Students will do this 3 times. Students will record their words per minute (WPM) on the classroom page. This is a flex class, and there will be several "themed" reading passages. After each class, students will illustrate the passage and share the illustration on the classroom page. Week 1: Sunflowers - "I have, who has?" game. I have a book about sunflowers. Who has a sunflower book? Week 2: All Kinds of Shells - Scavenger hunt: Can you find shells? Count and share some pictures on the classroom page Week 3: Happy Birthday, America - Scavenger hunt: take a picture of yourself having FUN in July. What are you doing and why? Week 4: The Amusement Park - Share a picture of a time you visited an amusement park. Share it with us in a short video or picture Week 5: The Picnic - I have a picnic basket. Who has a something for a picnic? Share a picture with us or a short video of you playing with your toy. New lessons will be uploaded on Wednesday of each week. I will expect all participants to be active in our discussions on the "classroom" page. I will facilitate and extend conversations and provide regular, consistent posts in the classroom. I will send feedback on comprehension questions, illustrations, and word fluency count.
