Description
Class Experience
The class will be both slides and discussions. I will show a short video (25 seconds) of fireflies displaying at night. Students will be encouraged to interact with their classmates and share any information they may have on these insects, such as where they have seen them. We will cover the basic life of a firefly or lightning bug. 1. Is a firefly a fly? Students will be able to answer the insect class or a winged beetle. 2. How do they glow? Students will be able to describe in general...
Students will be able to identify the firefly. They will learn that the firefly is a beetle not a fly. Students will also learn when a firefly glows its called bioluminescence. We will also cover the habit for them-fields and the forest edge and what they eat. We all look at the 12 significant places in the world for viewing fireflies. Since this is a 55-minute class, we will learn these basic concepts in general.
I am a volunteer naturalist at my local park. I have been teaching kids about the natural world for over 30 years. I also have a degree in biology and graduate classes in ecology.
There is no homework in the class.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
55 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
