Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
Beginner - Intermediate Level
During this five-week course, students will learn about basic financial statements, including a personal budget and a company's balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow.

Students will use Google Sheets on their laptop or computer in-order to create each financial statement during class. In order to benefit from this course, students do not have to have used Google Sheets before but should be proficient in using their mouse and keyboard.

𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝟭: We will begin by creating a basic personal budget. I will define "static" and "cell reference" formulas and then we will discuss the benefits of cell reference formulas. We will then use a budget template and practice using and updating the template.

𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝟮: We will discuss assets, liabilities, and equity. We will discuss the uses of a balance sheet and create a balance sheet using a mock company as an example.

𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝟯: We will create a revenue and expense tracker. We will discuss how this information is used to create a company's income statement. We will practice linking two spread sheets with formulas.

𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝟰: We will look at an income statement and cash flow and discuss the differences and what each tells us. We will use the cash flow statement to create graphs that show changes over multiple years.

𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝟱: We'll review and look at real company's examples of the different types of financial statements.

𝗧𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗲𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀:
Occasionally, learners may need additional help in completing a task in Google Sheets. I am able to give students the ability to share their screen so that I can see exactly what they are looking at. Usually, this works very well, and I am able to talk them through the task. If the learner is still not able to complete the task, they are able to grant me remote access so that I can complete the task for them. This allows us to move and cover all material in the class. At the end of class, I will revisit the skipped step and further troubleshoot with the learner.

Learning Goals

Learners will be able to calculate profit and net worth / equity.
Learners will be able to state the purpose of a balance sheet, income statement, cash flow and budget.
