Beginner - Intermediate Level
This 7-week interactive course is designed to give learners knowledge and skills necessary to confidently and effectively manage their personal finances. The objective is to reduce vulnerability, increase savvy, and empower learners to understand the implications of financial decisions, while aligning money choices with their values and goals. Topics include decisions around earning income, saving and investing, spending, risk management, and planning. A combination of lectures and active learning will encourage critical thinking and a personalized application of lessons to the student’s unique life situation.

Income
After completing this assignment, students will be able to:
• Evaluate the tradeoffs of decisions pertaining to career and income
• Identify and deconstruct components of compensation
There are many ways to contribute to society and earn an income doing so. When charting a path, it is important to understand the opportunity cost and tradeoffs of different choices. The lessons in this session should help inform decisions pertaining to income.

Lesson 2:
Spending
After completing this assignment, students will be able to:
• Design a personalized method of tracking and projecting spending
• Analyze a credit card statement
• Understand compound interest
• Analyze the impact of borrowing on financial health
Spending tends to just happen, favoring today’s wants while constraining tomorrow’s possibilities. In this session we will list spending goals and categorize expenses. The use of credit, the true cost of debt, and traps to avoid will be covered.

Lesson 3:
Investing
After completing this assignment, students will be able to:
• Identify different types of investment vehicles
• Understand the expected returns of the primary asset classes
• Know why one asset class might be selected over another
Putting one’s money to work can create wealth. In this session we will discuss stocks, bonds and cash and the why behind choosing one investment over another. We will cover different investment vehicles such as mutual funds and exchange-traded funds.

Lesson 4:
Risk
After completing this assignment, students will be able to:
• Identify different types of risk and ways to manage this risk
Risk management is a core practice in effective money management. In this session we will compare different types of investment risk and evaluate how one is rewarded for accepting uncertainty. We will take a deeper dive into the role of stocks as a savings vehicle. The role and limits of insurance as a risk-management tool will be discussed.
