Create a film from start to finish using your smartphone.

Class experience

Foundations for screenwriting, visual storytelling skills, camera angles, editing techniques and transitions, foundations in sound. In the end, students create a film of their own and enjoy the experience of making their film using just a smartphone.
I have been teaching digital media to students from 2nd to 5th grade. Students love the dynamic of making a film. As a film professional, I love teaching the kids about these subjects; I'm very passionate about them. Although, from my perspective, I engage with the students by talking about movies and how fun is to create them, I also enjoy building collaborative groups and leaders who work together to create something new and unique.
Homework Offered
In every class, there is an assignment for the students to reinforce the core activity. Class One: Come up with an idea for their film project and draft a screenplay. Class Two: Communicate emotions using photos. Create a storyboard of your film, and location scouting Class Three: Prep your movie, start filming. Practice camera angles. Class Four: Edit your film. Final touches, audio, music, color correction. Class Five: Finish your film and turn it in!
2 - 4 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Students choose to share the work done from the previous day's assignment at the beginning of the class. These activities can measure their level of success in class. The final project for the students will be the creation of a short film of two minutes long. I love to create reflections with students and encourage sharing their opinions and ideas about class topics and what they love about their learning experience. Parents might need to help their children in this class. Making movies is about collaboration. So I encourage you to work with them. Every child is different. Some could do the whole project by themselves; others need support. Every class, I emphasize my will to help and answer questions at any time. Not only during the course. You can always reach me with any concerns.
Grades Offered
Students must own/have access to a smartphone or a Smart Tablet for the class. I recommended editing software that is free and can be downloaded from the appropriate website. During the course, I will send a list of proper equipment and apps for students who want to embark on smartphone filmmaking during the course. However, it is not mandatory to buy equipment that is just a list of tools for them to use.
The content is curated and reviewed for the students. I regularly check the material I show in class with https://www.commonsensemedia.org/, a great tool for parents and teachers to understand what is appropriate to show kids and what age.
The teacher always advises students to check with parents that the teacher mention in class. Sometimes the teacher talks about certain films that are not age-appropriate for them; however, the teacher will never show these films' video clips.
