Class Experience

Students will make their way through the Marvel Cinematic Universe as they analyze individual filmmakers as well as the overall storytelling of the MCU. You can join into this movie club at any time and are not required to watch previous films on the list to enjoy the class or the universe. The bulk of the discussion each week will be on the film that is listed for that week; occasionally, discussions might mention previous or future films as far as filmmaking technique (director/writer) or character arcs (Marvel characters/actor). We do try to keep spoilers down to a minimum - if a student hasn't seen a future film and the conversation is starting to discuss that character arc or filmmaker we will table the discussion for when we watch that future movie.

Students will need to watch the movie before class starts and then the class itself will be a discussion of the film. Students need to think beyond liking or disliking the movie. Worksheets will be provided to the students when they sign up to help them organize their thoughts as they watch the movie and after.

We'll look at the decisions the filmmaker/studio made to make the movie/show.
What would the movie/show have been like if he/she/they had made different decisions?
Is this movie typical or different of the filmmaker/MCU style? What similarities do you see from movie to movie?
How did casting, setting, story style, and/or writing work to create the movie you saw?
Does the filmmaker have a theme?
Does the filmmaker have a tone?
What makes the movie memorable or not?
Is the movie similar to another movie(s)?
Easter eggs?

We will be making our way through the Marvel Cinematic Universe in chronological order of when the story takes place, because of this some movies/shows might have discrepancies if they were made before the MCU was cemented or were made out of order (we will attempt to find those plot inconsistencies throughout the MCU).

Students do NOT need to start this ongoing class on day one - they can join at any time since each week will primarily focus on the movie/show that we watch that week.
