Description

Class Experience

Students will be able to connect movies made between 1940-1965 with themes relevant in our modern world like the immigrant experience, privacy, and a world in turmoil.
Students will practice their critical thinking and writing skills through weekly writing assignments.
Students will be introduced to the history of classic movies.
I love classic movies so much, I have a Casablanca tattoo on my arm.
These movies have been a passion of mine since my early teens. In college and graduate school, I took many course on film and film studies. I have also published on the topic of film preservation.
Homework due each Sunday at 12pm EST.
Every Monday students will be given a question designed to prompt critical thinking. Before the following Sunday at 12pm EST they should respond to the question in at least 200words in the Outschool classroom. They are encouraged but not required to respond to their classmate's submissions.
For the fourth week of class, student will also vote in the Film Club Oscar Awards.
I will supply links to video lessons for each week.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Students will be given feedback throughout the class but there will be no formal assessment.
No live meetings, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
I have checked the ratings of all of these films at www.commonsensemedia.org and none are rated for kids older than 13, but the movies do reflect their eras. There will be smoking, drinking, and a lack of sensitivity towards women and minorities at times. We will address some of these issues in class as we try to make connections to modern themes.
