This fun Filipino social class and club is for any student who is eager to learn and share about the Philippines --- language, food, music, arts, etc! This class invites students to share their knowledge and curiosity of the Philippines and its culture and traditions. This is a wonderful opportunity for learners to know more about the Philippines from the perspective of a native-born Filipino. Learners will virtually travel to the Philippines and fall in love with the lessons and learning they will get here. As this is an ongoing class, we will meet once a week. You are free to subscribe or unsubscribe anytime. Students will learn to take turns in sharing some of their works through fun arts, stories, songs, etc. Here is how the class structure would look like: Introduction - 5 minutes Teaching Time - 10 minutes Student Discussion & Sharing - 20 minutes Conclusion - 5 minutes Week of March 23: Filipino Greetings and Values - I will share with the students some Filipino cultural values (Mano Po, Bayanihan Spirit, etc). We will talk and discuss about them and share the positive characteristics of each one. Week of March 26: Filipino Art - I will share the works of famous Filipino artists (Fernando Amorsolo, et al) and their depiction of Filipino life. Students will have an opportunity to share about their own art in class and talk about it. Week of April 2: Filipino Music - I will share and talk about some Filipino artists (Lea Salonga, Arnel Pineda, etc) known for their global contributions in music. Students can share their favorite music or song that they know. Week of April 9: Filipino Food - I will share with the students Filipino traditional foods (Adobo, Sinigang, Pansit, etc) and a personal recipe with them. Students can share their favorite food through discussions. Week of April 16: Filipino Animals - I will showcase animals that are unique to the Philippines (Philippine Eagle, Philippine Cobra, tarsier, etc). Students will share their animal drawing in class. Week of April 23: Filipino Games - I will share the different traditional childhood games (Sepak Takraw, Patintero, Luksong Tinik) played in the Philippines. Students will do a game in class together. We will discuss their thoughts about the game. Week of April 30: Filipino Dance - I will share the different cultural dances (Tinikling, Carinosa, etc). Students will share about what they know about different dances. Week of May 7: Filipino Landscape - I will share what the Philippines landscape (islands, mountain regions) looks like. Students will share their thoughts about what it's like to live there. Week of May 14: Filipino Transportation - I will share the variety of transportations (Jeepney, pump boats, habal-habal, etc) found in the Philippines. Students will share their thoughts about what it's like to ride in one of those fun vehicles. Week of May 28: Filipino Celebrations - I will share major holidays and celebrations (Simbang Gabi, Pasko, Eid al-Adha, etc) of the Philippines. Students will share what holidays their families celebrate. Week of June 4: Filipino Stories - I will share a Filipino story based on Philippine Mythology. We will discuss the story and characters and the moral lessons we get from it. Week of June 11: Filipino Proverbs - I will share some Filipino proverbs and quotes (based on Jose Rizal's works). We will share how those proverbs can help us understand about life. This is a wonderful opportunity for learners to meet new friends and get to know each other. I hope to create a fun, casual class for everyone who wish to be a part of a social club where we talk, share stories, discuss, and just simply have a good time hanging out as friends. I was born and raised in the Philippines. I speak 4 major Filipino languages/dialects. Years ago, I was a licensed school teacher in the Philippines and taught Filipino (Tagalog) in the classroom. I understand how it is to learn a new language. I am patient and kind to my students. I strive to create a fun and engaging learning environment for my students. My students' progress is my success.
