Class Experience

This class is taught in English.
Students will learn the National Standards for Science for Grade five Science.
The following areas of science will be taught:

Matter- 5PS1-1, 5PS1-2, 5PS1-3, 5PS1-4
My background includes teaching science classes for more than 38 years. Fifth-grade science is a critical year for understanding the basics of general science that will be built on in middle school and high school science classes. I have degrees in education and a concentration in middle school sciences.
Students will be given homework challenges to complete and submit for feedback. The challenges are interactive and intended to support the learning from the weekly lessons. There are also online games/activities, (Kahoot, Simulations, labs) to complete with other classmates. The games support the necessary vocabulary that is required for 5th-grade science standards and they are meant to reinforce the vocabulary that will be used in class.
I will send out some handouts that you can print at home. For experiments, I will post the list of materials ahead of time so students can gather the supplies in time if they choose to participate that week. I highly suggest you purchase Great Source ScienceSaurus for Grades 4 & 5. It can be found on Amazon or Thriftbooks and is available in paperback, but it is NOT required. It is a wonderful resource that will help cement learning and I will refer to it throughout the course.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
The teacher will check on student's understanding of the topics at hand through the class assignments and challenges. The class will be interactive as students will be encouraged to participate through a discussion board through the classroom platform where they can compare their investigation results as well as through online simulations, lab results, and games that are sent from the teacher. There will be ongoing Kahoot Challenges that students can participate in as well as homework challenge activities (mostly labs and hands-on), that students can share with each other and the teacher through the classroom. There will be a semester test offered at the end of the course.
No live meetings, and an estimated 4+ hours per week outside of class.
The content in this unit of a semester course does not have any sensitive subjects.
ScienceSaurus Student Handbook for Grades 4 & 5. It has a Blue cover with a lion on the front. I purchased mine through Thriftbooks at a great savings.
