US Grade 5
The math class meets three times per week and is ideal for 9 through 12-year-old children, depending on their abilities and previous knowledge. We will utilize Singapore Primary Mathematics (US Edition) as our foundational text. Families are responsible for purchasing the required textbook and workbook and may wish to purchase the extra practice book if they find it useful. The class will be taught following the Singapore model of Concrete ► Pictorial ► Abstract to help students visualize and grasp concepts. This method has been proven to help students think more mathematically, developing a deeper understanding of mathematical operations, rather than relying solely on memorization. Students will have ample opportunity to solve problems, working on-screen, using the various classroom tools, as well as throughout the week, where they are encouraged to send their solutions through the Outschool classroom. Students are highly encouraged to keep a notebook, and/ or refer back to the videos that are posted following the webinar. Select supplemental videos are also posted for topics that present added challenge. Families should be willing to engage in a variety of multi-sensory activities to support learning math concepts, in addition to class time. Each week will include several pages of home-time learning, and other suggested activities to aid in this goal. A class at this level requires much involvement on the part of the parent. Many parents choose to follow along in the classroom on a daily basis, as there are assignments that need to be completed at home. For those not familiar with Singapore Math, a thorough review, by Cathy Duffy, can be found here: https://cathyduffyreviews.com/homeschool-reviews-core-curricula/math/grades-k-6/singapore-math-primary-mathematics Students will cover the following topics over the course of eight weeks, with the pace being determined by the abilities of each group. This allows for the instruction to be as individualized as possible. Week 1: Whole Numbers Week 2: Place Values through Millions Week 3: Approximation and Estimation Week 4: Multiplying by Tens, Hundreds or Thousands Week 5: Dividing by Tens, Hundreds or Thousands Week 6: Order of Operations Week 7: Word Problems Week 8: Review
