US Grade 5
This semester long math class is geared towards older students who would like to be with their peers, while they work out the intricacies of math. The learners will be introduced to a topic during the class session and then have follow-up activities to do during the week. While the class meets twice per week, families should be prepared to spend time daily, practicing math. Each week will include several pages of home-time learning, outside of class session time. The class will meet three times per week for 30 minute sessions and will utilize Singapore Math 5B, a world renowned math program. Families are responsible for purchasing the required materials as students will have regular assignments. Singapore Primary Math is an excellent series for those who want a fair amount of practice without excess busywork. You can read a review of Singapore Primary Mathematics by Cathy Duffy here: https://cathyduffyreviews.com/homeschool-reviews-core-curricula/math/grades-k-6/singapore-math-primary-mathematics My classes focus heavily on the various tools, strategies, and models available to students, and we use these constantly during class to help them develop the ability to determine on their own, which tool or model best applies to a given situation. Students will be introduced to problems and solutions via the shared whiteboard. They will then be asked to solve problems on their own (with assistance given as needed), using the chat box feature. This allows all students to solve each problem. We review the solutions together, especially when it is clear students are not grasping a concept. Thus there is ample practice time for all students. Students will cover the following topics: Topic 1: Decimals Session 1: Approximation, Estimation, and Multiplication of Decimals Session 2: Multiplication by a 2-digit Whole Number Topic 2: Percentages Session 3: Percents on a Grid Session 4: Writing Fractions as Percentages Session 5: Percentage of a Quantity Topic 3: Averages Session 6: Working with Averages Topic 4: Rate Session 7: Calculating Rate Topic 5: Graphs Session 8: Line Graphs Topic 6: Triangles Session 9: Sum of Angles of a Triangle Session 10: Isosceles and Equilateral Triangles Session 11: Drawing Triangles Topic 7: 4-Sided Figures Session 12: Parallelograms, Rhombuses, and Trapezoids Topic 8: Tessellations Session 13: Tiling Patterns Topic 9: Volume Session 14: Cubes and Cuboids Session 15: Finding the Volume of a Solid Topic 10: Review Session 16: Comprehensive Review
