Beginner Level
Cultural awareness, language learning and physical movement are all part of this fun and educational dance class taught by Ms. Katia who has more than 15 years of experience as a dancer and dance assistant instructor. Ms. Katia will teach basic Mexican folkloric dance moves, choreography and Spanish vocabulary as she shares the rich, colorful and popular Mexican culture of her family. Learners will enjoy a fun warm up incorporating the Spanish language which will allow students to listen and practice Spanish. Students will learn two or more Mexican folk dance steps focusing on footwork and hand movement, practice and showcase their learning in every class. At the end of the dance routine, learners will cool down to fun music as they continue to learn and practice the beautiful Spanish language. In this class, all learners will get to enjoy, appreciate, and enrich themselves in the wonderful Mexican culture while they have fun, make new amigos, and learn the valuable Spanish language. ¡Nos vemos en clase y decimos...así se baila en México! ¡Zapateale! Week of Sept. 25 - Learners will warm up to a bilingual/Spanish song. Students will learn 2 traditional steps (tijeras y borracho) used in Mexican folkloric dance followed by a cool down to a bilingual/Spanish song and activity. Throughout the entire dance routines, students will be learning and practicing Spanish vocabulary. Week of Oct. 2 - Learners will warm up to a bilingual/Spanish song. Students will learn 2 traditional steps (zapateado y remate) used in Mexican folkloric dance followed by a cool down to a bilingual/Spanish song and activity. Throughout the entire dance routines, students will be learning and practicing Spanish vocabulary. Week of Oct. 9 - Learners will warm up to a bilingual/Spanish song. Students will learn 2 traditional steps (giro y carretilla) used in Mexican folkloric dance followed by a cool down to a bilingual/Spanish song and activity. Throughout the entire dance routines, students will be learning and practicing Spanish vocabulary. Week of Oct. 16 - Learners will warm up to a bilingual/Spanish song. Students will learn 2 traditional steps (redoble y planta y tacón) used in Mexican folkloric dance followed by a cool down to a bilingual/Spanish song and activity. Throughout the entire dance routines, students will be learning and practicing Spanish vocabulary. Week of Oct. 23 - Learners will warm up to a bilingual/Spanish song. Students will learn 2 traditional steps (redoble y planta y tacón) used in Mexican folkloric dance followed by a cool down to a bilingual/Spanish song and activity. Throughout the entire dance routines, students will be learning and practicing Spanish vocabulary.
Learning Goals
Students will be able to name and perform Mexican folkloric dance steps, demonstrate and improve physical movement, express and pronounce Spanish vocabulary and appreciate Mexican culture as they learn facts and practice movement through Mexican cultural dances.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Students should have an open space to be able to move. Parental supervision is recommended while class is in session due to learner moving around to warm-up, perform dance steps, and cool down. While Mexican folkloric shoes are not required, students should wear closed-toed shoes to protect their feet. Hard-soled shoes are recommended. A board or wood floor is recommended to hear the sound of a taconazo (heel tapping the floor).
Supply List
Not a requirement but a full circle skirt is encouraged and hard-sole shoes.
