Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
Students will be taught about four influential and courageous trailblazing female poets of the 19th and 20th centuries. They will learn about the brutal and sometimes tragic experiences these women faced. Students will discover how these women influenced the culture of their time and how their influence can still be seen today. We will cover the lives of each poet, read samples of each poet's work, and discuss the events that earned them the title of "fierce feminists." Each week we will take two poets and cover major events in their lives, read samples of their work, and discuss their titles as "fierce feminists."

Here is the schedule of poets we will study:
Week 1: Elizabeth Barrett Browning & Sylvia Plath
Week 2: Anna Akhmatova & Audre Lorde

I am the type of teacher who enjoys discussions and interaction with my students. I want to see students passionately learning and wanting more. I teach so that everyone has a chance to participate. I ask questions and I want my students to ask questions, too. I believe that learning is a lifelong endeavor, and I believe that comes through in my teaching style.

There will be some lecture time, but there will be ample time for discussion, too. I will have slides of the poetry, as well as photographs or images of the poets to share with the class.
Learning Goals
Students will expand their knowledge of feminist literature and see how four fierce female poets withstood the flames of resistance to shape and influence the literary world.

Parental Guidance
There will be brief discussions of abuse, imprisonment, labor camps, execution, sexuality, mental illness, and suicide, as related to the experiences of the poets in this class. I know these are heavy subjects; however, in my opinion, one cannot discuss the works of these brave, strong, and gifted women without acknowledging the pain and the struggles they faced.
Supply List
I will supply materials as needed for the class.

External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

I am a published writer. The title of my book is Mountains and Melancholy: A Collection of Poems About Life With Depression. Also, I've been a mental health blogger for the Coping With Depression blog at HealthyPlace.com since August 2017. My final post comes out this week; after nearly three years, I felt it was time for me to move on to other pursuits. I'm sharing this information here to show that I am capable of handling the topic of mental health in a sensitive and educated manner. Additionally, I am currently enrolled in graduate school working on my MA in English.

The discussions about depression and other mental illnesses and suicide will be handled with gentleness and sensitivity.

The discussions about abuse, imprisonment, labor camps, and execution will also be handled in the same way. I will guide the discussion, oversee what is being said, and allow students to express their feelings and thoughts.

As for discussions of sexuality, there will be nothing overt or graphic. The topics will center on liberation and freedom for women and will be handled in a delicate and tasteful manner.

Please know these discussions are just one facet of the class. Our main focus will be on the strength, resilience, and poetic power of these amazing women.

Finally, I have been reading, studying, and writing poetry since I was in elementary school. I am a former public school teacher and also a veteran homeschool educator who has taught poetry to all ages. I have also led poetry workshops for adults and am currently earning my MA in English.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me.
