Class Experience

Every year in the winter time, so-called "Christmas Markets" or "Weihnachtsmärkte" pop up all over Germany. These are open-air festival/farmer's market type gatherings in town squares featuring booths selling traditional German holiday foods and handicrafts. Christmas markets generally start popping up in November and remain in place several weeks, until January. Join us on a virtual field trip to a German Christmas Market to learn more about this yearly German tradition.

Day 1 Agenda
1. The teacher will use pictures and explanations (in English) to describe the experience of walking through a specific German Christmas market (Berlin, Regensburg, Munich, etc.).
2. The teacher will describe foods commonly found at a Christmas market and provide the German name for each food.
3. The teacher will describe handicrafts typically found at a Christmas market and provide the German name for each handicraft.
4. The teacher will introduce common phrases used to order food or make purchases at a Christmas market.
5. Learners will choose the foods and handicrafts they like best from the previous description and practice ordering/purchasing them in German.

Day 2 Agenda

Parental Guidance
Christianity has been the dominant religion in Germany for centuries, so Christianity plays an integral part in many German traditions. German Christmas markets are rooted in the practice of celebrating the Christian holiday of Christmas. Although aspects of Christmas may be touched on, this class does not seek to discuss Christmas or Christianity in detail. It aims to provide a factual and unbiased description of the practical aspects involved in the German tradition of Christmas markets.

Guten Tag and welcome to my page. I am excited to practice language with you! Having lived in both Germany and the United States, I am bilingual in German and English. As a German-English translator, ESL teacher, and German teacher, I have spent over 10 years inhabiting the crossroads where German and English come together. This experience has been an invaluable asset that helps me explain the nuances of each language to my students in simple, practical terms. I started teaching English as a second language to children in China online about one year ago and I love all of the opportunities online learning presents for engaging learning experiences.

I teach both German as a second language and English as a second language classes. My sessions focus on providing students with authentic situations in which to practice targeted skills such as grammar, vocabulary, and conversation in English or German.

I am an ATA-certified German ->English translator and hold a CELTA Certificate from Cambridge for ESL teaching, where I learned curriculum development and teaching skills that I now apply to both English and German classes. I also hold a Master of Arts in interkulturelle Germanistik (Intercultural German Studies) from the Universität Bayreuth in Germany and a Bachelor of Arts in German Studies from Weber State University in the United States. An Associate of Applied Science in Technical Drafting for manufacturing and mechanical engineering from Weber State University gives me a solid technical background as well. I love combining my technical skills with language to create interesting and unique classes for young learners.

When I'm not working, I can be found biking up to 50 miles on my trusty bicycle or trying to learn a language I don't already know (currently French).

I look forward to seeing you in class!
