Class Experience

Learners will get to explore a variety of stringed instruments in this interactive field trip experience! First, they will be introduced to how stringed instruments produce sound with their vibration and frequency. In this discussion, a slow motion video of a string vibrating will be viewed! This will also cover the different ways to play the strings, including plucking/finger-picking, strumming with and without a pick, hammering, and bowing. We will discuss the materials used to make the instruments, which influences the sound quality (timbre) that is produced.

We will begin with the ukulele! Then we will continue on to the acoustic guitar, electric guitar, Irish harp, pedal harp, and violin. As a bonus, they will also get to see the inside of the piano, which is the 'harp' with all strings that are hammered. With each instrument, learners will get to see the instrument up close, learn about how many strings each has, how it is tuned, and how it is played through a live demonstration! They will also have ample opportunity to interact with me to ask questions and have discussion about each instrument through chat or on video.

No previous experience or knowledge in music is necessary! The goal of this class is for learners to get an up close look at the stringed instrument family and explore their sounds!
