In this expansion of the Easy Access Fiddle Tunes, students will have the opportunity to maintain and develop their fiddling skills. Each session will introduce a new simple tune, which we will elaborate on according to the abilities of the participants. Note reading is helpful but not required -- most important are good listening ears. Songs will first be demonstrated and then taught via call and response. There will focused discussion of a particular fiddling technique and time for Q&A....
Through ongoing participation, students will build up a repertoire of fiddle tunes they can access by memory. Students will also improve their understanding of fiddling as a full-body performance. Technique will covered everything from alternative ways of holding the instrument, to specific bowing styles, to creating percussive sounds on the instrument.
A lifelong violinist, Bel grew up playing with others in addition to private lessons. As a child, she was trained classically, primarily through the Suzuki method, which emphasis aural learning before note-reading. Fiddling is also an aural tradition, which she picked up in fiddle camps and school groups. The joy of creativity pervades her playing, which she shares with others wherever in the world she goes.
Learners are recommended to practice the songs and musical concepts introduced in class.
Students must have their own instrument ready to play.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Learner participation is assessed based on motivation to learn, effort, and creativity. A feedback report can be sent following class, per request.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
This class will utilize online databases of fiddling tunes to provide sheet music and explain concepts. Videos of fiddlers may also be displayed from Youtube.
