US Grade 5 - 8
This vocabulary-building course prepares middle school writers for their journey into the world of creative fiction by introducing them to fiction writing terminology and how to use it. No prior writing experience is required; in fact, this class is perfect for students who enjoy writing or would like to begin writing fiction, but haven't yet taken any formal fiction writing classes. Students will learn literary terminology for characters, point of view, perspective, the components of a story (such as plot and narrative structure), and other key terms that will help them succeed in future writing classes. With the power of a writer's vocabulary in hand, your student will be prepared to take writing classes focused on fantasy or sci-fi, horror or suspense, futuristic or historical fiction, or even fanfiction. Students will also learn some of the tips and tricks of successful writers! The first 40 minutes of class focus on vocabulary, while the remaining time is devoted to tricks, tips, and habits of successful writers, as well as a Q&A on the writing, editing, and publishing process. We do not write during class time in this course, but instead work on the skill set needed to be successful writers independently or in future classes. I also offer this class in combination with Fiction Writing for Beginners as a 5-day (M-F) camp, Camp Crash Course!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree from Kennesaw State University
As an experienced fiction writer and writing teacher, I present a writer's lexicon in a fun and accessible way. By focusing on vocabulary that students will most need in middle school-aged classes, I am able to prepare students for fiction-writing classes that are geared to their age-level, but are still challenging.
