US Grade 5 - 7
In this highly interactive writing class designed for young writers we will learn and develop exceptional writing skills as well as hone our creative mind. Each week a brief lesson will help students learn techniques to write the best possible stories and characters - from impossible lands to dragons to princesses to nasty hobgoblins! After our lesson, students are encouraged to share what they have been working on, whether it is a short story, poem, graphic novel or related project. As a group we will encourage each writer, provide feedback and continually improve our writing and creative thinking skills. At the end of our lesson, learners will then be prompted to write a short piece as instructed. The writing prompt is to help direct creative thinking that can be used in their own personal stories. The short writing piece will then be shared in the upcoming week, if the student wishes. For those learners who are shy and reluctant to share, the instructor is available for private messaging, tutoring and general help through the Outschool's classroom messaging service. The classroom will be relaxed and fun. Learners only need to bring pen, paper, an open mind and their pet dragons. (Invisible dragons do not count!) Our week's lessons will start on and build upon these lessons: Week One: Introduction to Writing Introduction to Writing Defining Your Story Idea Writing A Synopsis Week Two: Creating Characters Creating an Unforgettable Main Character Creating a Formidable Antagonist Creating Secondary Characters Week Three: Developing Plot Expanding Your Idea Into a Page-Turning Plot Choosing Your Point of View Completing Research Week Four: Genre Specifics Fantasy Writing Tips & Techniques Sci-Fi Writing Tips & Techniques Horror Writing Tips & Techniques Mystery Writing Tips & Techniques Week Five: Editing and Publishing Rewriting & Editing Packaging Your Book Idea Publishing Options Each week students will delve into reading material that is complimented with presentations that highlight the week's topic.
