Class Experience

US Grade Pre-Kindergarten
This is an intro-to-feminism course for younger kids. We use the Frozen movies to understand some of the main ideas of feminism.*

We will first introduce feminism as a word that means "Everyone is important and should be treated that way!" Feminism wants everyone to be treated fairly, including people who are boys, girls, neither, or both. (A brief explanation of gender is included with instructions to talk to their grown-ups if they have more questions about what gender is.)

Then, we talk about Frozen and ask the following questions:
1) Are the girls and boys treated equally in the Frozen movies? (Gender equality.)
2) Do the characters in the movie have to follow rules about how people are "supposed" to be behave because of their gender? (Gender norms.)

Students will have a chance to share their thoughts about the movies and the characters. The class ends with a brief discussion of how they can try to make the world a better place for everyone.

*Note for parents: our view of feminism comes from an intersectional perspective. In classes for older kids, we discuss aspects of intersectionality in this class, including race, gender identity, and sexual orientation. However, in this younger class, the focus will be on gender.

Learning Goals

Students will learn several aspects of feminist theory, appropriate to the age range (7-10) and apply those theories to the popular Disney movies.

Parental Guidance
The feminist theories of this class are based on intersectional feminism, which argues that gender/gender identity, sexual orientation, race, nationality, language, socioeconomic class, and physical ability are all factors in power and privilege. That said, this class for younger children will focus primarily on gender and gender roles. This class is trans-inclusive and welcomes/celebrates non-binary children or children with trans and non-binary parents.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I've been an English professor for 10 years, and I've been on Outschool since January 2020. I really enjoy talking with young kids about feminism and providing them with a positive framework for understanding gender equality. This class is taught from an intersectional feminist perspective, which means that I believe that gender is only one area of cultural injustice. We should also work together to fix other societal problems: racism, ableism, discrimination against neurodivergent people, size discrimination, classism, and more.
