Class Experience

Students will be learning Fitness Exercises that tone, strengthen and support flexibility in the muscular/skeletal systems as well as strengthen the circulatory and respiratory systems. Methodologies such as Yoga, Breathing Exercises, QiGong, calisthenic fitness stretches and exercises, including movements to warm up and cool down, jump rope, jumping jacks, abdominal toning exercises and relaxation methods for post-work out will be taught. There will be an emphasis in upholding right relationship with themselves and others such as being helpful to others, learning empathy and compassion via yoga philosophy and storytelling. Using breathing and mindfulness relaxation, understanding of how emotions arise and subside will be discussed and exercises will be offered to bring more balance in those areas using yoga techniques such as deep relaxation, meditating and breathing exercises. Recipes for healthy living will be discussed and some easy recipes to practice in their own kitchens may be planned involving little or no cooking.

The topics that will be covered will vary each week. October 9 - 16 SELF-CONFIDENCE; October 16 - 23 FINDING BALANCE; October 23 - 30 CALMING EMOTIONS; October 30 - November 6 BUILDING EMPATHY; November 6 to 13 HEALTHY SNACKS. Students will learn yoga stretches with modifications to fit their comfort and flexibility level for safe stretching. Mindfulness exercises like focusing on the breath is used to help relax emotions and mind chatter. And class ends with a relaxation guidance to strengthen body/mind alignment and strengthen immunity. The class gives students positive choices to count on despite so many changes in one's life or circumstances. All the topics covered are part of the yoga philosophy and are weaved into the wording during a class. Ethics and morals are all part of any healthy regimen. And when it is practiced on oneself, it is easier to practice in the world we live in.

The class is LIVE and the first class is spent introducing ourselves and sharing something like where we live and how we are doing mentally and physically at this time. Every class begins with introducing the class theme for that day. And the remaining time will be structured for warming up exercises/movements to prevent injury, then toning/strengthening calisthenic & yoga exercises/movements, breathing exercises for increasing lung capacity, cooling down exercises/movements and a short relaxation to allow the body/mind to digest and absorb all the information in a non-vocal way.

I'm a seasoned teacher in the art of yoga, and wellness. I'm empathetic and kind and can assess what students may need modifications to certain exercises and will encourage those with more strength to challenge themselves. My ultimate teaching style is one that upholds respect, friendliness, kindness and empathy for all beings. My nature is calm and peaceful.

I will encourage students to chat with one another before class and give time after class as well. A Question and Answer time is allowed as well to dispel any doubts about the material or other information related to the class that students have concerns about. If a topic seems to need a discussion around it, just say self-confidence, I will encourage students to interact and chat.

There is no prior experience or knowledge needed for this class.

Learning Goals

Students will learn different ways to take care of themselves to meet their self-image in terms of Health, Wellness and Fitness. Through a variety of yoga exercises, each student sees what works for them and how to modify exercises to fit their comfort level and needs. This improves self-confidence and self-image because they learn to modify movements according to their own capabilities rather than looking like someone else. A combination of Yoga stretching and yoga breathing, fitness exercises that target abdominals, arms, back, legs, to strengthen and create more flexibility without use of weights; aerobic movements such as yoga postures that combine flowing from one posture to another, as well as floor exercises and calisthenics to tone body. Resting afterwards is key to balancing out movement with relaxation. Using guided visualization exercises to calm the body and mind is taught at the end of the class.

Health tips in terms of healthy choices in food will also be introduced. Using the basics of Ayurveda which is the Nutrition of Yoga, students will learn how their unique body constitution needs certain foods and spices to stay optimally healthy and balanced. Cooking demonstrations using simple ingredients will be announced and is not part of every class. During these formidable years, having a solid foundation in wellness for body and mind to stay on track and keep healthy at every level is key for developing a long term 'feel good' and positive attitude to self-care and self-confidence.

Parental Guidance
Your child's safety and privacy is a priority. This class involves physical fitness exercises and while no equipment is needed, the workout space needs to be safe. Clear any furniture away from the area where the student will be participating in this class. The space should be well lit, properly ventilated and free from obstructions. A yoga mat is helpful but if the student has a carpeted area, that will be provide enough safety. Water bottles are also helpful. As with any physical activity, injuries could occur so knowing your child's abilities and strengths as well as weaknesses in determining if this class is the right fit for them will create a safe and fun class. While it isn't necessary that a parent be present during the class, it is recommended that a parent or caretaker properly supervise to make sure students are prepared.

A yoga mat. If we do make a recipe for a class, the information will be sent the week prior to class so that students are prepared and can choose to participate.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi.
I teach children Mindfulness exercises, relaxation techniques, meditation, Hatha Yoga and Ayurveda Nutrition.
My background involves developing a children's yoga and meditation program at a Montessori school in Pennsylvania where I was a classroom assistant for the early elementary classes. And blending the yoga and mindfulness aspect into the school curriculum to seamlessly integrate and match head teachers' themes for the week. If it was animals they were studying, I'd use the animal theme as we stretched our bodies into animal poses or learned how some animals keep quiet and hide while being alert and aware. It was lots of fun and a wonderful way to offer the children ways to deal with emotions, stress and just being a kid. They appreciated the language of Yoga using the Sanskrit words to describe the yoga postures or techniques. Instead of criss-cross apple sauce pose, it would be Sukhasana, easy pose. They even learned how to sing entire songs and melodies in Sanskrit for their graduation.
The values I uphold in my teaching philosophy are the same values I uphold in my own life: Honesty, integrity, loyalty, kindness, respect for all beings and nature, joyfulness and that learning is fun. I'm a perennial student and love new things and learning new languages, techniques and fun things like jumping rope. I learned how to double-dutch style with a jump rope when children taught it to me when I was 55! They were the best teachers and very patient with me, because I made a lot of mistakes, that's for sure.
Life for me is a glass that is full and I am grateful for each and every day that I breathe in life and have opportunities to be present, help others and appreciate all the beauty around me.
Namaste. I honor the light within all beings!
