Fearless Tonal Charcoal Drawing: The Basics!
Class experience
Many art lovers admire charcoal for the beauty and depth that it can express in drawing. Even so, beginners — and frankly even experienced artists — are often intimidated by the complexity of working with it. This class will seek to break down those fears and help students set up a basic tonal charcoal drawing, in the pursuit not of perfection but rather of accepting that mistakes and imperfections in charcoal can deepen (not tarnish) a drawing's beauty. TECHNIQUES This course will provide...
This class is taught in English.
Students will improve their understanding of the charcoal drawing process. In addition to practicing composition setup, they will learn these drawing techniques: back and forth, blending, layering, additive drawing, reductive drawing. Finally, they will have the chance to briefly practice these techniques in a quick drawing that they will produce before the end of class.
Only age appropriate content will be featured in the course demo drawings. In the same way, students are strongly encouraged to use only appropriate content to draw and share during the class.
Course materials: -thick drawing paper, at least 9"x12" or 11"x17" size (100 lb weight or more) - $10 -compressed charcoal (at least 4 sticks) - $8 -hard plastic eraser (Staedtler recommended) - $2 -kneaded eraser - $2 -paper towels (for cleaning) -drawing subject (see below) Drawing subject: Students should bring to class a subject that they would like to draw. This subject may be a physical object, architectural space, photo, etc. While student experimentation and exploration are strongly encouraged, for purposes of this class the subject should be representational, not abstract.
We will refer to many drawing techniques throughout the class, including back and forth, blending, additive drawing, and reductive drawing.
