Description
Class Experience
1) Enhance comprehension 2) Grow vocabulary 3) Build communication skills 4) Expand their thinking
I have taught reading in elementary where several sensitive themed books have been read, analyzed and discussed. I have run successful book clubs within the public school setting (both in NY and NC) and outside public school settings. I am well versed in how to run a successful book club where students can feel safe, supported, and free to explore their ideas, opinions, and thoughts in a constructive way with their peers.
Reading of 40-70 pages per week PRIOR to each class (depending upon current book) is required. Each week an individual task will be assigned which will usually take anywhere from approx. 10-20 minutes to complete based on the learner.
1 file available upon enrollmentBook: Either physical copy, or online version. Check your local library for your books or if they have a free online lending app to help cut costs. Pencils, color pencils, and a folder to hold all handouts/worksheets/activities
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
Parental Guidance is Always required in all my classes. Parents must be near to assist with any technical or academic help your child needs during class. Parents must remain OFF-SCREEN during class sessions per Outschool's safety policy. This book club may include books that have sensitive themes or higher thinking and reasoning material for your child. As each child is different, IT IS UP TO THE PARENT to read the book synopsis, themes, and reading levels provided in the class description to make sure that you and your child are both comfortable with the reading levels, expectations/rules, and content BEFORE signing up for this class. While I will not be giving my own personal views, bias, or opinions, STUDENTS WILL be encourage to discuss their own ideas, opinions, and viewpoints freely in a respectful and safe environment. To maintain this environment every student is expected to follow book club rules (as stated in class description and posted on the class page). Should any students break the book club rules they will be given a warning. If they repeat the action they will be immediately removed from class and a parent/student/instructor discussion will be needed to be allowed to complete any remaining sessions or join future book club sessions with me.
The following books will be covered over the August 2022- May 2023 Club dates: Crenshaw by Katherine Applegate (This session) Masterminds by Gordon Korman The Losers Club by Andrew Clements Love, Ruby Lavender by Deborah Wiles Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library by Chris Grabenstein Unusual Chickens for an exceptional poultry farmer by Kelly Jones Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan
