Anyone can learn algebra. The key is to build a solid foundation because algebra builds on itself. Without a strong foundation, students may struggle. Let's stop that cycle and empower them instead. Learners will understand the foundational skills of basic algebra, apply that understanding to solving problems, and be able to evaluate the type of problem and how to solve them in an assessment. This includes the vocabulary of math. This course meets 3 times per week to give students more live instruction in the skills being learned. The brief breakdown by week: Week 1: Solving Multi-Step Problems. Participants will review how to solve algebra problems, including the rules of adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing integers, and the rules of exponents. Week 2: Radicals. Students will review perfect squares and square roots, and expand and discover how to simplify a non-perfect square and solve. Week 3: FOIL. Students will learn how to multiply complex equations. Week 4: Factoring Complex Equations. This is a continuation from Week 3. Students will learn how to factor out common factors to simplify equations, factor complex equations, and use the Quadratic Equation. Week 5: Slope. Students will learn to graph a line from an equation, how to identify the equation of a line from a graph, the Slope-Intercept Formula, and the Point-Slope Formula. They will find the solution of the line, the number of solutions, and be able to identify the types of lines (parallel, intersecting, and same line). Week 6: Solve for 2 Variables. This is a continuation from Week 5. Students will learn the three techniques for solving equations with multiple variables: Graphing, Substitution Method, and the Elimination Method. Week 7: Solving and Graphing Inequalities. This is a continuation from Week 6. They will apply their knowledge of graphing to solving for multiple lines and discovering complex common solutions. Week 8: Review and practice, Q&A, and some fun math games.
Learning Goals
Learners will improve their understanding of the fundamentals of algebra, strengthen their skills, and prepare to move up in math levels. Students will experience increased confidence in their own abilities in math.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a California credentialed teacher, but I'm also the one who gets my hand slapped for teaching math the easy way. Yes, I'm a bit of a rogue. I have tutored algebra students for 20 years with insane success. There are many ways to do math, but I believe in doing it the easy way, and as a result, my students typically perform much better on tests than the "norm." I've also had students come back to me with a request from their classroom teacher to use my techniques! (Yes, feel free to share.) My simple strategies will work for anyone who wants to master algebra, even parents who shudder with horror when they think about their own math-learning years.
