**This is an accelerated biology course allowing students to learn high school biology in just seven weeks! This is great to open up school schedules in the school year to allow for sports and other activities. Students will get a high quality interactive biology class. We will combine both lecture and lab experience during our classes each week. The following topics will be explored: June 7, Class 1: Scientific Method/Engineering Design; Lab: Scientific method- alka seltzer tabs, salt water, warm water, tap water, vinegar water. June 9, Class 2: Biomolecules- carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids. Lab: Iodine exploration/demonstration June 14, Class 3: Cell organelles and types of cells. Lab: Cell anatomy drawings June 16, Class 4: Cell transport (osmosis, diffusion, active transport). Lab: Gummy bear osmosis lab. Material required: gummy bears, paper cups, sugar water, salt water. June 21, Class 5: Photosynthesis/Respiration. Lab: Yeast respiration. Materials: Bread yeast, warm water, balloons, plastic water bottle, sugar. June 23, Class 6: Cell division/mitosis/meiosis/cell cycle. Lab: Onion Root tip lab July 5, Class 7: Mendelian Genetics. Punnett Square Lab. Materials: Coin July 7, Class 8: Complex inheritance. Complex Inheritance/Blood Typing Lab. Materials: Coin July 12, Class 9: Mutations/Transcription/Translation. Group Practice lab. July 14, Class 10: Ecology/Interdependence. Food Chains and Food Webs Lab July 19, Class 11: Biodiversity/Invasive Species. Simulation Lab July 21, Class 12: Evolution July 23, Class 13: Course Review/Final Exam Class will be taught with the use of powerpoint slides. Occasionally, students may be asked to use external resources provided by the instructor such as YouTube videos, articles and online simulations. Labs/additional enrichment activities will be started in class. Learners may be expected to conclude these activities on their own and report findings in the online classroom as needed. Periodic quizzes and tests will be assigned to determine the learner's overall understanding of content. Grades will be assigned upon request.
